Tokyo, Japan - July/August 2020
The day she feared had arrived, the first day of the two-week spectrum. The event was worshipped globally, and the athletes trained their entire lives to represent their countries at the games. She was shaking when she looked at her reflection through the mirror, with GB's uniform on, rocking the blue, white and red as requested. She looked every inch of a professional athlete, representing the United Kingdom. The bittersweet memories surfaced the longer she stared her imagine; the wins, the losses, the first time she put on the uniform and everything in-between. She was depressed and overwhelmed at once. 'Who am I without all of this? Who is Scaletter Smith without swimming?' she thought when her eyes danced on her reflection a tad longer before she sighed. 'Well, let's rock this up', she murmured before she made a hasty departure from her and Emerson's room.
She spotted the GB flag before she hasted forward to catch the gathering group attending the parade. She spotted Emerson standing next to Natalia, both in deep conversation, Natalia shaking her head and looking at him disapprovingly. Scar made her way towards them and called them from a distance, forcing the pair to stop their conversation and turning to look at her, unsettled look on their faces.
'Hi love, I was looking for you', Emerson said, looking guilty when Scar reached them and pressed his lips to her cheek. 'Me too. Where did you take off whilst I was getting ready?' she teased him when they walked hand in hand, making Emerson blush and stutter. 'I, eh, I, uh-'
'Love, I'm teasing. No need to be so tense.' Natalia huffed next to them and shot a meaningful look in the couple's direction. They joined the rest of the swimmers, greeted by high fives, hugs and joyful chatters when they made their way into the stadium.
The expectation was built up high, and Scar also felt it. Although the atmosphere was cheerful, Scar was sad. She was sad that all of this would be over in 14 days. She no longer had the opportunity to compete at the sport she so dearly loved and had carried her forward for all those years. Her eyes glimmered in agony when she watched performance after performance passing through before her. The programme guided the events towards a grand spectate, the lighting ceremony of the Olympic torch to symbolise the beginning of the games.
The crowd wowed in awe when the fireworks explored the sky. Scar had lifted her face towards the sky, looking at the firework display spreading above the stadium in beautiful colours and shapes. Her eyes reflected the scenes above her. Capturing the excitement of the events before her, yet the bittersweetness creeping in. Emerson's hand found hers, spreading warmth to her body, and assurance filled her veins. Their eyes found each other and flashed a faint smile to each other. Her countdown had begun.
When she woke up the following morning, she groaned as her body felt heavy because of the late-night and standing for hours. Emerson snored lightly to her ear, snuggled tightly against her back, arms locked around her body. Since the schedule was made to match the US watchers' prime television time, the finals were swum in the morning and preliminary heats in the evening. Her first style was 100m butterfly, one of her favourites. Her motivation was at rock bottom as she didn't feel the point on any of the races. Why would it matter if she came first or last when she couldn't improve afterwards anyway?
