Monte Carlo, Monaco - May 2020
Scar's leg was tapping to the floor nervously when she stared at the door in front of her, waiting for it to open any minute. It had been a month since the diagnosis that she was no longer able to swim professionally. Her body had called it quits without any consultation or warning.
She was angry, furious and channelling pure rage. The last month had been tough. After the doctor's appointment, she had been in denial, pretending nothing had happened and carried on as usual. She hadn't shared her fears nor concerns with Emerson either, even when he had asked several times if she was okay. She had avoided any potential conversation on the doctor's appointment, whether it was with Bob, friends or family. She didn't understand the fuss as nothing was wrong, from her perspective.
Then a week earlier, she had reached a new stage in her denial when she had started to snap at people. She also felt the whole world was against her if things didn't go as planned. She thought she had been mistreated and questioned; why her? What did she do that she had to go through such a cruel joke? This had led her to be angry with the world, adding additional strain to her marriage, yet still refusing to share the results with her husband, as nothing was wrong.
The tip of the iceberg was when she had a go at an innocent side looker during practice. The poor lad had accidentally kicked her to her side from the lane next to her. After the yelling match with a perfect stranger, Bob had laid his terms with her. Either she sought support to process her feelings in a healthy matter, or he would ban her from the pool until she sorted herself out; talk about blackmail.
Therefore, she was sitting at the sports phycologist's reception, waiting to meet her doctor. She knew she was childish when she sulked to cover her nervousness. Eventually, the door opened and the fear set in her. She stared forward with big, round eyes, hoping that she could leave already.
The doctor gave her an assuring smile before she called her forward.
'Scarlett Smith?' The doctor's light green eyes were gentle-looking, patient when she signed Scar to step inside the office. She oozed trust and peacefulness. With a shaky breath, Scar stepped over the threshold into the office. The doctor's name turned out to be Andrea. She had guided Scar to take a seat on a sofa whilst she busied herself to grab the necessary items for their sessions.
Scar's eyes wandered around the room, taking in the comforting details of subtle blues and greys. A wide grin appeared on Scar's lips when she saw a reward for the best comedian standing on the bookshelf. 'I guess the cat is out of the bag now.' Andrea laughed when she had followed Scar's look at the trophy. 'It was a joke between my friends and me.' The smile on Andrea's face was full of fondness, making Scar feel a tad more at ease than minutes before.
Andrea had settled herself into a grey armchair with her legs crossed, notebook hanging on her lap. She had fixed her eyes to Scar. 'So I spoke to your coach and got a thorough understanding of the situation, but before we jump into the deep end, I would like to know more about you. You can think of this as a speed dating and me as your smoking date if it helps.' Andrea's cheeky comment made Scar laugh whilst she shook her head. 'Not sure if the analogy works in my case since I have never tried speed dating, but I'll do my best.' Scar commented with a faint smile on her face.
She took a deep breath and started talking. Once she began, she found it difficult to stop. The events flashed before her when she walked through the past weeks' events, leading up to sitting at Andrea's office. One topic opened another door to the next one and then a next one. Scar's emotions went through a rollercoaster when she relived her proudest moments as well as her struggles as an athlete. They dove deep into her mental strengths and weaknesses.
