Their journey continued in silence until they reached the middle of the labyrinth, stopping at the edge of the square when Scar's eyes landed on a figure she hadn't seen for over a year. 'Bob?' She whispered in wonder, letting go of Seb when she walked towards her former coach, eyes glued to his face. Bob looked at her sadly when she hugged him.
'I'm sorry, love.' His words pushed her over the edge, and she broke down. The howl escaped from her throat when she was tightly hugged. 'There, there, Scar.' Her salty tears wetted his shirt when she clung to him, crying all the depressed feelings. She was shushed, rocked side to side until her breathing calmed down, her sobs decreased into silent tears.
'Why are you here?' She asked quietly when they let go of the hug, and Bob wiped tears away from his face. 'Someone thought you would need more friendly faces today.' His eyes locked to something behind her, making her turn around when Seb gave a faint smile to the pair, and he shrugged. 'You were close, so I thought he could help.' Seb explained and reached the team. Scar choked when she attempted to thank him for his grand gesture. 'I'll be inside. You two take your time.' He connected their lips briefly before disappearing into the green alley.
Bob and Scar's eyes lingered after him, silence landing in-between the pair. 'He seems a keeper.' Bob commented, attempting to lighten the mood as always. Scar shot a smile towards her former coach when she had turned around to face him, but the sorrow returned soon after. 'Do you remember what I said to you when your mother passed away?' Bob suddenly asked, and she pouted. 'We all have our dedicated time with our loved ones. We use the time to our best ability. We create precious memories that we can carry with us, building hope and faith when we feel we need encouragement. The momentum carries us forward. The pain you feel now can be channelled; use it to embrace the good in your life. Don't push him out.'
Bob reached her and landed his hand on her shoulder. 'I know you, Scar. You're okay now, but the feelings will catch up eventually. When they do, give people a chance to support you. Especially this one guy who seems head over heels in love with you.' Bob began strolling toward the same direction as Seb before shouting his shoulder. 'Don't be a stranger, Scar.'

Two weeks later
Her fingers played with the edge of sunglasses that laid on her lap. Her eyes were glued to the gentleman sitting on the opposite side of the desk, waiting for him to start speaking. Emerson's parents were sitting beside her, but she was able to feel the hate radiating from them. 'Why are we here?' Emerson's mum asked impatiently. She shot a lingering look towards Scar, nonverbally asking why Scar was also in the room.
The lawyer cleared his throat, looking uncomfortable in front of the dysfunctional family. ' Are you Scarlette Smith?' He paused to look at the name on the papers before lifting his grey eyes to meet hers. Scar nodded slowly and pushed a timid smile to her lips. 'Yes, I am.' An absent nod was given to signal the confirmation before he moved on to Emerson's parents. 'Arthur and Sharon James?' The couple nodded firmly, with a friendly smile fixated on their features. 'Excuse me, where are Natalie's parents?'
'They passed away a few years back. No siblings.' Scar said quietly, receiving a raised eyebrows from the lawyer. 'Thank you, Ms Smith. All required attendees for the testament reading are present.'
'The testament?' Scar blurted out with wide eyes, making the lawyer nod his head again. 'Yes, the couple had written a testimonial after the birth of their son.'
Son?! They had a son?! The information pushed her thoughts into a tornado mode, twirling endlessly. She made a weak attempt to grasp onto the red line threat of the story, failing miserably. The lawyer cleared his throat again before he continued. 'Both Miss Watson and Mr Emerson wrote a testimonial if something happened to them after the birth of their son, Alex, in June. The parents saw fit that one of you would be their son's legal guardian until their son would turn 21 and gain access to his fortune. Until Alex turns 21, no one can use the assets. The flat in Stratford should be rented out until Alex can and is willing to take it over.'
Scar's ears rang when she zoned out of the conversation when the lawyer listed Alex's rights before he would have an adult at the age of 18. Still, she was brought up to the present with an awkward cough. Her cheeks beamed Scarlette red. 'Apologies....' she mumbled under her breath and sat up straighter in the chair. She heard a comment beside her from Emerson's mum. 'Typical. Always miles away.'
Scar bit her tongue until she gasped at the taste of blood in her mouth. Dam it. She actually bit her tongue. 'Since Alex is a couple of months old, who is his legal guardian?' The duo huffed beside Scar. 'Such a ridiculous question. Obviously, the grandparents will take care of Alex.' Sarah commented icy, turning the knife deeper in her chest to confirm their strong dislike towards her. 'Ergh -' The lawyer starched his head, looking out of place for a moment.
'Here's where things get complicated, Mrs James.' The grey eyes landed briefly on the papers that he had flipped back and worth, buying time. Scar furrowed her temple. 'Complicated? Who's the guarding if not them?' Scar nodded towards Emerson's parents. 'It's you, Ms Smith.'
'Excuse me?' Her jaw dropped, and her breathing became shallow. The loud voices fainted around her when she stared at the lawyer, talking intensively with Emerson's parents. Her ears rang. She had become a single parent overnight. '-There's no way I will accept this decision. Emerson has had a moment of hesitation if he taught she's fit to take care of Alex. She doesn't even know him! The testament is a fraud! We'll take this to court!' Sarah screamed, and chills ran down Scar's spine, making her shrug. Guess tragedy made everyone show their true colours.
'Ms Watson and Mr James notarised their testimonial on July 5th at the registration office in London. Their document is legal, and their request should be honoured.'
'What if we were able to work on an agreement between me and Arthur and Sarah?' Scar asked when she slowly began to catch up with the events. She was a bloody mum now. 'For example, what if I'm incapable of taking care of a child due to my work responsibilities? Would that be fit enough reason to act in the best interest of the child's wellbeing?'
A dry smile appeared on the lawyer's lips. 'Ms Smith -'
'Scar, please.'
'Scar, before the testament is modified, you will have to take the legal custody of the child. There will be a monitoring period to assess whether you are fit to Alex's legal guardian. If the assessment period is a failure, we seek other guardian options, keeping in mind the child's wellbeing.' The lawyer stated patiently, drilling his gaze between the participants in the room. 'I hope this clarifies the process. The child has been with child care services since the parents' passing. Therefore he may be sensitive until he settles down.'
Scar nodded weakly. Scar knew nothing about parenthood. 'When do I pick up Alex?' Scar asked in defeat. 'Someone will arrive this afternoon to bring him to your place and walk through the basics.'
'Thank you. Please pass the child care services my number if they have any questions upfront.'
Scar gathered her items and stood up. 'You must be happy now.' A snarling comment lingered behind her. Scar turned slowly around to face Emerson's parents, who looked at her with a cold, unwelcoming stare. 'Elastic.' She commented dryly. 'Don't be so smug. We will ensure Alex will end up where he belongs - with his family. Like you can bring the stability that he needs.' Sarah spatted quietly, with a stern voice, eyes dark and bitter.
Scar stepped closer to the couple until she stood in front of the elderly woman. She bent down to be eye to eye with her. 'Thank you, Sarah.' A flash of confusion passed her eyes when Scar continued. 'Thank you for finally showing your true colours. I'll take care of Alex to my best ability. Don't you worry, we'll be just fine, two of us.' A wry smile curved her lips up. 'He will never know his daddy was a cheating little shit. Doodles.' Her smile transferred into a self-righteous one when she saw the shocked reaction from the couple. She turned on her heels, head high. I'm gonna be just fine.
