Chapter fifty

Almost as soon as the two cannons have fired the first tribute makes a dash for it. A brown haired woman full of cuts some of which still oozing blood has climbed up on the spoke one down from us and is half running half limping towards the packs at the centre. She must have been hiding in the water just out of sight. I glance at Peeta. He knows that look.

This one’s mine.

He nods and begins to scan the area behind me, looking for any others tributes.

I draw bow and line her in my sights, compensating for her speed I let the arrow fly. Less than a second later the arrow hits home. She stumbles forward, face contorted in pain before falling and sliding into the water. Less than a second later a cannon fires indicating her death and another one of my kills.

“Go Marc. We’ve got you.” I whisper to him.

Without any hesitation he jumps up and makes a clean dive into the water below. I rely on Peeta to cover him until he comes into my view. Since he had dived in from behind me there will be a couple of minutes where I will not be able to see him.

As I expected two other tributes decide to make a dash for it just after Marc. Hopefully they will assume that Peeta and I are somewhere around the edge but not where Marc came from, giving us both a bit more cover for a while at least. While I watch, Marc and the other two tributes swim to the closest spoke to them. Marc reaches his first and swiftly pulls himself up mere metres from us. The other two are still swimming and I take the chance to identify them.

One of them male the other female.

Both appear to be armed as they pull themselves up onto their spoke the female is just one away from Marc, though this is still some twenty metres, the male is almost on the complete opposite one to Marc. The male one is armed with a spear they pull down from their back and the other a knife in hand. Both more armed for hand-to-hand combat. Marc has a three of knives. Two strapped to his legs the other in his hand.

The woman looks to be one of the twins. Blonde, slight and fast. She looks determined as she makes the run. She is unhampered by injuries obviously managed to get by without getting hurt. She probably hasn’t had many kills outside of the initial brawl of the Cornucopia. The other is older and much slower. I take note of where the blonde has come from and assume she is being covered though I am unable to see any movement from the window or the rooftop. Her twin will be somewhere close. Maybe she is somewhere else and they haven’t met up yet. Not that it matters, I think to myself. They both have to die one way or another. I take aim on the slower man knowing he will be easier to get a clean shot on.

“I have the male.” I whisper to Peeta.

“Ok.” He whispers back as I assume he takes aim on the career.

I let my arrow fly and the impact of it hitting him in the back throws him off balance as he topples into the water.

“No!” I hear the cry of a woman from my left. This must have been his wife. She stumbles out from her hiding place and just stands on the ledge looking at her now dead husband floating in the water.

The cannon fires confirming yet another one of my kills.

This is going to be a bloodbath. I just hope that it is not Peeta’s or mine.
