Chapter forty-nine

We sit for a couple of hours in a comfortable silence just enjoying each other’s company. It must be nearing the early hours of the morning. The only sign we have had that is it late is that we can no longer see far. Peeta sits with his back against the wall just off from the small window where the snow is still being blown in. The temperature has dropped considerably and so we are sat close to Marc who is sound asleep in order to share body heat as well as all of our resources. Peeta has his arms around me and I am leaning against his chest with the sleeping bag over us both. In the cold I know neither of us are particularly up for talking and so we sit there, huddled for warmth, lost in our own thoughts. I take this opportunity to formulate a plan.

I think back to the announcement earlier this morning and try to understand its meaning. They have ordered everyone left in the arena to a cornucopia and since the other one will be well underwater by now they must have meant this one. That also means that there will probably be some form of punishment for those who have not made it here in time. Assuming that all of the ones who started up here with me have made it back that makes the minimum count of tributes five if memory serves me right. There are three other pairs left I think, one, twenty-three and twenty-four. I don’t know if they have found each other but I can only assume they have.

The dash to the cornucopia tomorrow is going to be tough and very dangerous. I know if Peeta or I were to go out there we would be targeted by everyone instantly. I can’t risk him. Peeta wouldn’t be able to run as fast as we would need and I am much better acting as cover, as a sniper.

“Are there three other pairs left?” Asks Peeta.

“That’s what I was just trying to work out. I think there is. I can only remember one of them though.”

“The twins?”

“Yeah. They looked like they were going to be a tough match. You can bet they have both made it here. They aren’t that much younger than us really. Twenty-five maybe? That would have made them fifteen at the end of the rebellion. Definitely careers.”

“Most of the others will be here too. There was that couple in their late forties. I don’t want to have to kill them but I’m sure they will be here too. They looked frail but they are probably tougher than we give them credit.”

“I don’t want you going out to the Cornucopia tomorrow Katniss.”

“Nore do I want you.”  I whisper back.

“What use am I going to be staying here? You will be able to cover me as I go and retrieve whatever it is they have for us.”

“Your leg will hamper you. You won’t be able to run as fast as me.” I argue even though I know he is right.

“You will be able to cover me.”

“Not from other arrows or spears.” I counter.

“We wait. It would do us better if we don’t go out straight away. You forget I have done one of these before. The best thing we could do is stalk our prey like I would in the forest. You can use a bow reasonably well. Both of us, one from this window and one from the roof, can pick off a couple of them first.”
