Chapter Three: As The Bell Rings

"What?!" repeated Riley.

"You heard me," began Mrs. Nelson, "You need a retake on your math test, and I need a student to help Mr. Matherson here around the school."

Riley looked at me for a minute.

"But doesn't the welcoming do that?" whined Riley.

"They're out of available members. All the committee members already have a new kid each. Therefore, I have full authority to assign any student to take care of James.

"I don't need a guide. I can sort through this place on my own, honestly." I said.

"Nonsense James, every new student is assigned someone to help them adapt to the school and show them around." exclaimed Mrs. Nelson.

"But.." began Riley, then stopped, realising there was no point in arguing.

Mrs. Nelson crossed her arms and smiled. "I thought so. Riley I'll talk to Mr. Anderson about your retest and see what I can do."

"Thanks." said Riley sighing.

"Well then, off you go! Welcome to Melrose High Mr. Matherson, I hope you enjoy it here." said Mrs. Nelson.

"Thanks." I said slamming the door behind me as Riley and I stepped out of Mrs. Nelson's office.

I turned to Riley and said, "You don't have to do this. I can manage on my own."

"It's fine." she said, "I really need that re-test. I'm Riley."

"James. Nice to meet you." I said raising my hand to shake hers.

"Shaking hands?" laughed Riley. "What are you? 70?"

"Yeh, well, what's wrong with that?" I said my hand still extended.

Riley stood there staring at me for a second, then slowly reached out her hand and shook mine.

"Nice to meet you too." she said smiling. "Come on, let me show you around. i've got a free period to kill."

We walked for about 10 minutes until we reached a garden-like square. Wooden benches, a pair on each side, circumvented a glorious fountain that sat in the center sprinkling water every minute or so. Green was everywhere; green bushes between each pair of benches, green trees surrounded the square, and a massive greenhouse stood about 20 yards away from the square.

"This," said Riley, "is the quad; a hang-out place in between classes or during free periods."

"Sweet." I said looking around. The quad was quite beautiful. The trees all around gave it a foresty sort of vibe. It was so serene.

"Hey Riley!" said a girl passing by.

"Hey!" Riley answered as we left the quad.

Next, we went to the library, which was on the second floor past the nurse's office.
