Crash Car Burn

Chapter 14

Aiden’s POV

Once again I found myself doubting my sanity but Jamie missed running and I am going to do everything I can to make up for all the things he is missing.

“We really don’t have to,” he said for the millionth time but I could hear the excitement in his voice that he was trying to hide from me and maybe himself.

“I know but we’re going to anyway,” I replied, taking a corner. The road we were on now was long and winding and soon we’ll be there and then Jamie is going to run. The last few minutes felt like they took forever and the fact that Jamie had gone completely silent wasn’t helping much. My nerves were going crazy, both from wanting to do such a crazy thing and from Jamie’s proximity.

“I know where we are going,” he finally said as I turned onto the gravel road that will lead us to the clearing in the forest and the lake.

“Yeah?” I asked, wondering if he would get it right.

“Yeah, the lake. I haven’t been here in like forever,” Jamie replied, unable to hide his excitement. It was now clear in his voice and I couldn’t help but feel extremely happy.

“I come here a lot,” I said, feeling no need to hide anything from him. I wanted to know him inside out and I wanted to share all of me with him as well, everything except for the huge fact that I am madly in love with him of course, I somehow doubt that he’d be very excited about that.

“Why?” Jamie asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“To think, it’s so peaceful and quiet,” I replied remembering the first time I came here alone. It felt strange, usually Jamie and Liam came with and we would spend hours swimming, making swings and just hanging around.

“I used to love coming here,” Jamie said, a smile tugging at the corner of his lip as I brought the car to a stop and switched it off.

“Let’s do it then,” I said, getting out of the car and walking around to meet Jamie. He had gotten out but made no attempt to go anywhere.

“This way,” I said as I took a hold of his arm with my hand. He was wearing only his t shirt, having taken off his jacket and the sudden skin to skin contact of his arm and my hand sent a shiver through my body. The touch probably didn’t mean anything to him, a mere helpful gesture but it meant everything to me and I couldn’t help but wish that someday, by some sort of miracle he would feel the same.

“What’s wrong?” Jamie asked from beside me.

“Nothing, let’s go,” I answered and started leading Jamie through the forest to the opening. It wasn’t a long walk and the path was pretty much even so it wasn’t too difficult.

“We’re here,” Jamie stated once we reached the clearing, tilting his head up towards the sky, taking in the fresh air, the smell of the water and the sounds of the forest. I let go of his arm and took a step away from him, my heart going crazy in my chest from watching him. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all, not the bringing Jamie here part but the keeping an eye on him part. How am I going to be able to spend so much time with him when just being close to him drove me insane. How am I going to be able to hide my feelings from him?

“Thank you,” Jamie said, smiling a real smile now as he turned to me.

“It’s nothing, now let’s run,” I said, trying to get a hold of myself.

“I’m still not sure that’s such a good idea,” Jamie stated but he was still smiling.

“The ground is even here and I won’t let go of you,” I replied, the mere thought of holding on to him causing my body to shiver with anticipation. If only this boy knew how much he means to me I thought to myself as I reached out and took his hand in mine. I wrapped my fingers around his but it took him a few seconds before he did the same, probably expecting me to hold on to his arm again not take his hand but I wasn’t going to do that. I wanted to give him the freedom of running and holding on to his arm just wasn’t going to work.

“This way,” I said, gently pulling his hand in the direction we had to go. He didn’t say anything but followed where I lead him and soon his hand relaxed in mine. Holding his hand was amazing but I had to keep on reminding myself that it didn’t mean the same to him as it did for me.

“Are you ready?” I asked, coming to a stop at the edge of the clearing where open field met the beginning of the forest.

“No,” Jamie answered nervously.

“I won’t let you fall,” I said, the words getting stuck in my throat as I spoke them. I won’t ever let you fall Jamie, and if you do I’ll catch you…

“Ok, let’s do it then,” he replied, taking a deep breath.

“On the count of three we just run straight ahead and whatever you do, don’t let go of my hand,” I said, my nerves starting to kick in again. Jamie didn’t reply, he just nodded his head in understanding.

“One, two, three,” I said and then we took off running. I haven’t ran like this for what seemed like forever but it wasn’t the burning sensation in my legs and body that made me feel ecstatically happy, it was the look on Jamie’s face, a look of peer bliss.

We were reaching the end of the clearing fast and although I would have ran with him forever we had to stop.

“We need to stop!” I half yelled as I softly pulled on Jamie’s hand. He slowed down and within a few seconds we came to a stop, both of us breathing heavily.

“That was amazing,” Jamie breathed as he pulled his hand out of mine and sat down on the ground, a huge smile on his face.

“Yes… yes it was,” I replied, sitting down across from him, longing for the warmth of his hand in mine.
