Chapter 28: An Sochraide

POV: Riley

My knees hit the ground of the smell of burning flesh. I felt the tears run down my face uncontrollably. I picked up the dog tags out of a pile of now dust. I wiped off the dust to reveal a name. Printed into the metal it said : Carson M. Hunter. I felt my heart crush into a million pieces. I felt like I couldn't breath. Everything to be crashing around me. I wasn't sure where I was anymore, how I got here. All I knew was that he was for sure dead. I looked around a caught another dead body. It was laying in a pool of the black liquid I had seen that day at the hotel. I looked at the face, it was Ashton. I cried even harder. He died protecting me. I would never ever forgive myself. I was the reason he was dead.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up to see Ari. I cried and clutched onto his dog tag.

She looked at the dust and looked back at Aidan. He just nodded once. She looked back at me.

“Riley, I am-” She started.

I shook my head.

“I didn't even get to say goodbye. I don't even get to see him one more time.” I said gasping.

I felt like my lungs were collapsing. I had this excruciating pain in my chest. My whole entire body ached, but at the same time I couldn't feel anything. I felt so numb.

“Riley I can't say I know what you are going through, but I promise it will get better.” She said rubbing my back.

I shook my head.

“No you don't understand, it doesn't. Carson told me, when a mate loses the other mate the pain never goes away.”

She nodded and swallowed hard.

“Take the comfort of knowing that he loved you enough to lay down his life to protect you.” She said.

I sobbed harder.

“No, this is all my fault. He should've just killed me when he had the chance. Then he would still be alive.”

Ari jerked me up from my kneeling position.

“You look at me Riley Starr.” She said sternly.

I looked up her face was clouded by my tears.

“Carson gave up his life to keep you safe, don't you dare disrespect him or make his effort worthless by trying or even thinking about doing anything to hurt yourself. Do you hear me?” She said.

I just nodded.

She nodded then she led me to a car. She slid in beside me.

“Take us back to the manor please.” She said.

I curled up in the seat and cried into the leather seat. I can't imagine not getting to see his beautiful blue eyes when I wake up. Not to kiss his lips, not feel his body against mine. Feel his warmth. I felt my heart turn cold. Then I felt the darkness hit me.

DREAM: RILEY

I walked down a forest surrounded isle it was bright, the sun was shining bright. It was so unlike the normal weather in Ireland. I was wearing a long white dress, my hair were down in long curls, they were held by a white veil. I looked and I saw Carson standing at the end in a suit. He was smiling at me. I lifted my skirt and started running toward him. He chuckled and opened his arms. I hit them and felt the tears start again.

“Carson.” I croaked.

He inhaled deeply and kissed my head.

“Riley.” He whispered hugging me tight.

I looked up at him memorizing his beautiful face over and over.

“Why did you leave me?” I asked.

He frowned.

“Baby, I never left. I've been here the whole time.” He said kissing my forehead again.

“Where?” I asked.

He smiled and ran his fingers across my cheek.

“In your soul. Remember, our souls are forever intertwined.” He said smiling brightly.

I sniffled.

“God Carson I already miss you so much.” I said.

He just nodded.

“Riley, it's going to be okay. Always remember that, I promised i'd always protect you. I will.” He said.

Suddenly the sun faded completely I heard laughter that sounded like children, it sounded erie. I looked around and shadows were surrounding us. My white dressed turned into a torn tattered black dress. Something was pulling me away from Carson's hold. He looked around frantic.

“Fight the shadows baby.” he called reaching for me.

I tried to run to him, I tried to fight of the shadows but they were to strong. They kept dragging me.

“No Carson! Please!” I called.

All of a sudden, I drug to a casket. It was opened.

“Look inside child.” A voice called.

I shook my head.

“I Said LOOK” I boomed.

I nodded and did as I was told.

I felt the greif consume me. It was Carson, his body and face was lifeless. His eyes were closed and his once pink lips were now a eire blue color, just a simple reminder how dead he was. His black hair was perfectly placed, unlike his normal messy curls. He was completely still. I reached out to touch his face, and as soon as I touched his skin he turned into a familiar pile of dust. I could feel the sobs shaking me.

The shadows danced all around laughing and taunting. I cried out.

“WHY! WHY TAKE HIM!” I cried out.

The voice now joined the shadows in the laughter.

“Weak girl, don't question what is done. He is dead, he isn't coming back. You will never see him again after this. Be thankful I felt pain for you and let you say goodbye.” The voice said.

I woke up screaming out in pain. My heart was breaking again.

I looked around to notice I was in Carson's bed. I knew it because I could smell him in the sheets. I curled in a ball and let the sobs consume me. It was just a dream, but to wake up to my reality was far worse. I inhaled deeply, soon even the smell of him on these sheets would fade, how long would I be able to picture his face, his smile, remember his touch. Would my memory of him fade like everything else. I had to promise myself it wouldn't. I had to be strong, like he would for me. I had to remember him. He wasn't dead as long as I was alive, our souls were forever entwined. Soul mates.

An Sochraide means: The Funeral so everyone knows. It's just translated to Irish, I didnt want to spoil the chapter.
