Still Wednesday

Scott

I wearily fall into my bed and get under the covers.

I pull the blankets over my head and curl up into a ball, wincing at the pain in my leg.

I immediately feel my eyelids fall heavy and I must fall asleep in just a few seconds.

"Hey, big bro."

I jump. "Jesus, dude. You gotta stop doing that."

"Hey, we're not allowed to say that up here. That's my stepbrother."

"Sorry. What do you want?"

"Little harsh, huh? Listen, there's some stuff going on up here. Something is going on that I can't tell you about. Dad says I can't tell you about it, but it's going to have a parallel event on Earth."

"Okay... and what does this have to do with me?"

"I... I can't say. You'll find out. It's really important. I can't tell you why all of this is happening... just remember that God has a plan."

"His plan isn't really that great right now."

She laughs. "Okay, then. Well, I've gotta go. Toodles!"

She leaves and it's just me and my thoughts.

Please, God, don't let me get hurt.

"I know that we need him. I know it's important. He has cancer." I groan to our stupid label.

"Okay, I know that. I get that. I'm just saying that we need to put more focus on this tour. I booked a gig for you guys tomorrow night. I'll send the details."

"Tomorrow?" I gasp.

"Yes. Just a small one at a radio station. Be there."

He hangs up the call.

I let out an exaggerated groan.

"Well I guess we should make a set list, then..." Kevin says quietly.

There's a long silence as Kevin starts typing out songs.

"Do you guys ever think about taking a break?"

I shoot my eyes towards Avi.

"Never."

He sighs. "I just really think we should. This tour is in a few months and we should just take some time off before the tour."

"I agree." Kirstie says quietly.

"Not a long one... just maybe for about a month. Just to get stuff straightened out."

I chew on my lip. "Okay."

"Just for a-"

"I get it."

"Mitch, don't-"

"Are we done here?"

Avi locks his eyes with mine.

"Sure."

He gets up and leaves.

Kevin and Kirstie get up to follow after he's outside. "Hang in there." Kevin mumbles.

This isn't a damn scrape on the knee, you can't just say "Hang in there".

Scott walks into the room.

I smile. "Hey baby."

He smiles. "How did the meeting go?"

I freeze my face into a smile. "It was great! We ended early."

He nods. "Can I have some soup?"

"What kind?" I ask.

"Potato."

I nod. "I'll start making some."

I get out the hash browns and soup and boil some water.

Scott prepared me for this, so we went and bought a bunch of soup stuff since it's easy on the stomach.

I hear the TV turn on to Spongebob.

I smile as I hear him quietly laugh at a stupid joke.

I go into the living room. "We have a performance tomorrow."

He smiles. "Yay! I missed singing."

I look at the dark circles under his eyes. "Uh... okay- I mean, great! Glad you're feeling good."

He nods.

"I'm gonna go check on the soup."

I go make the soup, listening to the sounds of his laughter.

I pick up my phone to call the record label.

We need an intervention.
