Ember let out a surprised squeak as we all landed on top of her. I could hear the guards coming closer. Looking behind me I saw their shadows growing. We have to hide! They can't find us here or it would be over! I quickly pulled Isaac and Isabella up with me. I looked around the hall for a room to hide in and then dragged everyone into it. A small cramped broom closet. I suppressed the urge to sneeze as the footsteps passed the closed door.
Ember groaned, "Collumino." A familiar glowing orb formed in her hand.
"What is going on?" Ember exclaimed and turned to look over at Isaac. We quickly covered her mouth with our hands, silently watching with fear as the shadow stopped outside the door. I felt a trickle of sweat drip down my neck. The footsteps continued down the hall and we all breathed a sigh of relief. I slowly removed my hands from Ember's mouth, her eyes narrowing at Isaac in confusion.
"Master Isaac? Mistress said you were still recovering, why are we hiding from the guards?" She turned to me, her eyes widening and her mouth hanging open in suspended shock, noticing Isabella next to me. "What magic is this?"
"Ember, we don't have much time to explain. We need to get out of the palace. Mother has gone insane and we're all in danger!" Isaac belted out.
Ember's eyes narrowed in confusion. "Danger? Mistress? I don't understand. What happened?"
"So much has happened, Ember. Would you please help us? We can explain everything when we get somewhere safe. We can't let the guards or Lilith know we were here." I pleaded.
Ember looked over us skeptically as she pondered, until finally, she sighed, "Fine. Follow me." She peeked her head out of the room and waved us through the door signaling the coast was clear. We followed her down the hall, past my room, and into another hidden corridor. It was different from the one before. It led to a long set of stairs that descended deep into the castle.
When we got to the bottom, we appeared to be in the basement. Ember led us to the far end of the room and placed a palm flat on the cold stone wall. "Revelare," she whispered.
The wall shook, and a panel peeled back, revealing a long dark tunnel. "This will lead us out of the city. It exits at the river that runs through Ravenwood forest. Once we get out, we can go to Bellanshire. I have family there we can stay with. Then you will tell me what is going on." her eyes shifting between Isaac and I before lingering on Isabella.
"Collumino." Ember summoned a small orb of light again in her hands and walked ahead. We followed close behind, calling our own light. The door behind us shook closed, encasing us in pitch darkness.
"What is this? I don't remember learning about it when we were given a tour and rundown of the castle," Isaac asked, studying the damp stone walls of the tunnel. The tunnel was tall enough for a person to stand in and wide enough to hold a large group. It was slightly flooded, most likely from the river.
