You were so nervous, there was nothing else to it. After you told your parents about your relationship with the Hero of Mobius, they were furious, they even threatened to stop your study, hoping you'd leave the hedgehog in hopes for a bright future. As if your future wouldn't be bright without him.
They even tried to take your phone away to stop all contact from him. Sadly, you had to lie to them just to keep it, telling them it had been smashed in a battle with the hedgehog.
That didn't really help the situation much.
Sonic had come over that same night, having not heard from you he was worried something had happened, and he promised you he would make it right.
But this isn't what you thought he meant.
Your anxiety was high, it was hard to breathe. You felt sick, and the (f/c) dress you wore felt tight, the room seemed lighter than it was. And the noise was painfully loud.
But you had to do this, you had to be here.
But man, this isn't what you thought you first dinner with your parents and boyfriend would be like. In fact, you had never thought about what it would be like, considering your parent's protectiveness.
Your blue boyfriend had reached out to them the day after you told them of your secret life, he wished to meet them and prove he wasn't as bad as they feared. The blue blur had even gone ahead and scheduled a dinner for the four of you; you were just lucky your parents were kind and accepting of the free dinner.
But now that you were here, it felt like more of an interview than a dinner. You sat next to Sonic, your eyes trained on your glass of water, while you parents sent daggers at him. The hedgehog sat proudly next to you, he wouldn't let your overly protective parents get to him, he already knew what to expect.
"Do you-"
"Being a hero pays a lot more than people would think." Sonic cut off your father, you'd already rehearsed what your parents would ask.
"How do you get the money?" You father asked again, slower this time. He never took his (e/c) eyes off the hedgehog.
Sonic shrugged, taking a sip from his glass, "I don't take if that's what you're asking. The house I'm in was built from scratch by my brother."
"You have a brother?"
"The smartest guy on Mobius. He's a bit of a scientist, he creates a lot of cool gadgets to keep myself and my friends safe when in battle." The hedgehog wrapped an arm around you.
Your father glared more, watching his hand rest on your shoulder, and you shrunk into the hedgehog's side. Sonic didn't seem phased, but you wished the ground would swallow you up. This was the very thing you had worried about since you started dating the hedgehog.
"And... These battles..." Your mother piped up, "How often do they happen?"
"Villains never rest, so us heroes are always on our feet. Some days are quiet, Eggman at least respects holidays enough to not attack the day before or after." Sonic flashed a smile, "It's a good workout really, keeps us in shape."
"How dangerous are they?" Your mother covered her mouth, looking a little pale. Her eyes darted to you, but she quickly flicked back to the hedgehog, "What sort of injuries do you face?"
"Not many actually. Only occasionally do we get a serious injury, and it's normally me." The blue Mobian let out a chuckle, "I am the primary target after all."
Good, he was using 'big' words. You'd told him that your parents thought poorly of a hero's smarts, since they fight so often and get beat around, it would have knocked a few screws loose. Their words, not yours.
"And you think being a primary target is safe for our daughter?" Your father almost snapped over the table. Your mother rested a hand on his shoulder, shaking her head.
"Of course it's not." Your eyes widened as Sonic gave another shrug. Why would he say that?! Your parents were frozen, both looking pale now in the restaurant's light, "But she's still sitting next to me, isn't she?"
"Yes. But don't you think it's cruel to risk her life? She's an innocent (a/t), she had nothing to do with you before all of this, she wasn't in the crossfire until now." Your father pressed forward, "She could get hurt at any moment, and it will be your fault."
"Dad." You had to stop the growl from rising, "I can look after myself."
"No, you don't need to risk your life for some adrenaline freak." Your father glared at you next, you cowered back, he'd never looked so mad before.
"Excuse me, Mr (L/N)." Sonic put a hand between the two of you, "If you don't mind me saying, I've seen your daughter out in the battlefield. She's one of our best fighters. She's taken out a whole bunch of Eggbutt's bots, and saved my life, as well as our other friend's lives, multiple times."
"That doesn't excuse the fact that she should be studying! She should be looking towards her future, not throw it away for the likes of you!" Your father slammed his hands on the table, causing both yourself and your mother to flinch. Sonic however, didn't react.
You wondered what the other people around the restaurant were thinking, were they watching you? Whispering? Sonic was here, you were surprised it was so quiet. Actually, you hadn't been served yet either.
Slowly, you raised your (e/c) gaze, only to find the restaurant was empty. Where was everyone? You blinked, rubbing your eyes; this was one of the most popular restaurants in Station Square, why was it so quiet?
Your father's ranting slowly turned to noise as you noticed a large shadow in the distance. Something sparked, and smoke started heading towards the building. Your eyes widened, before you jumped over the table and tackled your parents to the ground.
"Get down!" You yelled, flipping the table over. Sonic jumped behind it as well, just as the outside of the restaurant blew up.
Glass and debris flew everywhere, crashing into the wooden table and landing around you. Your mother let out a scream and covered her head, your father instantly going to protect her. Sonic seemed excited, glancing over the table and out into the street.
"Ready to show your parents what you can really do?" He asked you, before jumping out and running outside.
"What...? Sonic?!" You followed him, only for your father to grab onto your arm.
"No! You will not go out there. It's too dangerous!" He yelled, pulling you back.
You yelped, stumbling into the table as another loud explosion attacked the street. You could hear Sonic spindashing around and attacking the assailant, and you wished you were helping him right now. Who cared what your father said?
"No dad, I can do this." You pulled away from him, "Go find a safe spot, I'll find you when I'm done."
"I am your father. Listen to me." He stood, staring you down, "You will not fight."
"Just watch me." You stated, before running out into the street. Eggman was floating in the Egg Dragoon, tearing down a building with the drill and firing missiles into the air. Sonic was already running up the metal dragon's tail, spindashing into the back of it. The robot lurched forward, and you ducked under the drill, taking off towards the robot.
You could hear your father calling out to you, but you ignored him, jumping up onto the arm of the robot and heading towards the cockpit. You could see Eggman's large moustache from here, which meant he could see you. The human spotted you, before giving a wide grin and swinging the other arm at you. Diving out of the way, you landed on the chest plate of the robot, climbing towards the top.
The robot spun around, sending its drill through another building, and you hoped there was no one in there. You wondered if your parents were safe and glanced down at the restaurant. To your horror, your parents were still there, staring up at you and huddled into each other.
Sometimes, just sometimes you questioned their intelligence. This was one of those times.
"Sonic!" You looked around, trying to find the blue blur in the mess of red robot. The hedgehog was nowhere to be seen, until you reached the top and found him spindashing into the glass cockpit. When would Eggman learn?
The glass cracked under every hit, soon enough it would give way, but Eggman didn't seem worried. He had planned something, but what was it? As the glass gave way, you saw it. A net.
"Sonic!" You yelled again, running over as he hit the glass once more. It cracked, shattering into tiny pieces as the hedgehog propelled through. The net wrapped around him, catching him mid flight and inches from Eggman's face. The evil genius cackled, holding up the bag.
"Good luck getting out of this one rodent." He said, "You won't get through that net, not when it's made out of the finest diamond on Mobius!"
Sonic growled, before trying to cut through it. His spines did nothing, simply creating sparks, and the scientist let out a loud laugh. You growled, before running over and jumping up, breaking the net from the chains that held it up. The hedgehog fell, still entrapped but no longer in the air. You pulled at the netting as Eggman turned his attention back to the restaurant.
"And what do we have here? Surely not a hero's parents." The human chuckled, aiming the Egg Dragoon's weapon at them. He glanced at you as your ears perked and you turned your gaze to them.
"Mum! Dad! Run!" You yelled, your heart started beating in your chest. Sonic needed to be freed, but your parents were about to be roasted.
"Go save them." Sonic reached out, grabbing onto your arm, "I'll be fine, but they won't be."
You looked at him, seeing his emerald eyes shine through the diamond, you nodded and stood, before taking off down the arm of the robot. It's machine-gun like arm started to turn as you ran onto it, it was getting ready to fire.
The spinning metal made it hard to keep on your feet, eventually you slipped and landed on the ground with a thud. For once you were thankful that Eggman liked to relish in his victories earlier than he had finished a fight.
You reached your parents just in time, holding up your arm as the robot fired. Your mother cried out, grabbing onto you to pull you back, but you didn't move. The bullets flew at you, but none of them hit you. A large, light blue shield appeared, deflecting the rain of projectiles and spreading out in front of you.
Your parents both gasped and your mother slowly let you go, her fingers leaving your shoulders as you stepped forward, the bullets being sent back into the robot's arm. The machine-gun failed, and started to heat up, the red painted metal started to glow.
Finally, the arm exploded, and the Egg Dragoon lurched to the side, the drill now too heavy for it to hold up. You heard Eggman yell, before seeing the drill head your way. It dug into the ground, ripping up the asphalt as it headed towards your parents, and you stood in front of them.
Lowering the shield, you made sure they were behind you, before clapping your hands and sending out a wave of energy. The powerful wave ripped the drill from the Egg Dragoon, leaving the robot armless, defenceless. The drill slowed down, before resurfacing and crashing into the ground. It's spiraling point stopping mere centimetres from your nose.
You could hear yelling coming from the cockpit of the large metallic weapon, and you glanced back at your parents. They stared at you in shock, and your father stepped towards you.
"I have to go help Sonic." You said, but before you could take off, he grabbed your arm again.
"(Y/N)."
"No, I can do this."
"I know." He offered a smile, "I can see that, and I'm sorry for doubting you. I guess we got a little... Overprotective."
You blinked, before offering a smile, "Thanks."
"Now go save him, I don't want you to have to take his place." He let you go, and you gave him the thumbs up, before climbing onto the drill and running up it.
"Get mum to safety!" You yelled, making your way towards the robot. But as you ran, you could see a blue blur crashing through the wings, sending the metallic beast into the ground. Eggman tumbled onto the street, covering his head as he landed on his back.
You changed course and headed his way, before Sonic jumped in front of you.
"Easy." The hedgehog smiled, holding your shoulders, "The fight is over."
"I know, but I want to ask him why he thought it was a good idea to crash my dinner with you guys." You growled, trying to walk past him.
The hedgehog wrapped an arm around you, walking you in the other direction, "Why do you think the restaurant was empty?"
You blinked, tilting your head, "You organised this?!"
"Sorta." The hedgehog shrugged, "You needed to show your folk you had the stuff right? Did it work?"
"Sonic!" You punched his arm, "Eggman nearly killed them!"
"Nah, he would never have shot them."
"How would you know that?!"
Sonic smiled, tapping his nose as you walked back to the now destroyed diner.
"I simply made it so that Eggman would catch whiff of our dinner, he can never pass down crashing an event. Tails was watching his every move, so I knew about the diamond net, I had something to cut me out of there."
"So he was going to shoot my parents! Sonic you can't just risk their lives like that!"
"Wait up." The hedgehog raised a hand, "I distracted him enough to get you there in time, and if you didn't make it, Tails would have simply hacked in and disabled his arm."
He pointed to his ear, where you saw a little ear-piece, and you frowned. But before you could say anything, he cut you off again.
"It was a last resort; in case anything went wrong. Everything was under control."
"Sonic..." You sighed, before smiling and hugging him, "Thank you..."
"So it worked?" He smiled, wrapping his arms around you.
"Yeah, it worked."
"Great."
"But they still won't let you into my room, I can bet you on that one."
"Just watch them try and stop me."
