Memories

Far from the mountains;
Far from the lakes;
Where wheat fields still blow:
What are those abandoned buildings?
What are those distant monstrosities?
What are those monsters crawling?

That is the modern prairie,
With empty farm houses and empty towns;
With towering elevators, ten stories high,
And machinery the size of commercial jets;
Gone are the days of local schoolyards,
Gone are the days of family farms.

Still happy memories of the past remain;
Memories of growing up on the Saskatchewan plain;
Memories of family and friends,
Seeding and harvesting, dirt and toil;
But memories can be as trusted
As a giant foreign conglomerate
That builds skyscrapers across this vast and changed land.
