Eagle, bald eagle,
you monstrous thing!
A bald eagle. What?
Out here on bald prairie?
But here you are
on this half abandoned farmyard.
You burst away from the backyard trees,
so close, you startle me.
So close your black shape
eclipses the sun
and your size blots the sky.
So close, I believe your wings
will slap me,
but off to heights you soar,
an entourage of puny crows
chasing you — they think!
— crows are king here,
but not today, not right here,
because a god chooses to visit
the lost among this grove of trees,
as mortals, chasing after the immortal—
I shake my head in wonder,
eagle, bald eagle,
why did you come this way?
