Hinata's POV
I raced toward the gym, Kageyama only a few steps behind me. I decided to take the shortcut across the grass instead of just staying on the sidewalk. I turned my head to see Kageyama gaining on me, so after sprinting a few more steps, I flung myself onto the ground and screamed as loud as I could. Kageyama came to an immediate halt next to me and bent down quickly.
"Hinata! Are you okay? Oh my god, are you hurt? Hinata!"
I came out of my curled up position to look at him, my face scrunched up in mock pain. The amount of concern on his face surprised me so much I almost lost face for a second. I removed my hand from my ankle and put it in his.
"Help me up," I said with a grimace on my face.
"No, here, let me take a look at it," Kageyama said sincerely.
"No, no, no, I'll be fine if I just get up and walking a little." Kageyama furrowed his eyebrows but helped me up anyway. After taking a few steps while leaning on him, I quickly turned, and with all my strength pushed him to the ground and took off running. After a few seconds of shock, Kageyama got up, sprinting after me shouting, "dumbass!! Hinata you dumbass!" I reached the gym a few seconds before he did, and put my bag in front of my face to avoid anything he has to throw at me.
Kageyama, red-faced but keeping his cool, walked past me into the gym and I cautiously followed him. He put his bag down and stiffly walked over to the volleyball cart. He calmly grabbed two balls and then I made the mistake of turning to put my own bag down as well.
A ball going the speed of a car hit me in the side and another quickly came at my head. My body hit the court and I laid there, trying to get a reaction out of Kageyama, but all I got was another ball pegged at me. I flipped over onto my back and groaned loudly.
"KAGEYAMA. You are gonna hurt me for real if you keeping throwing those at me." Another ball hit my chest. A violent cough escaped me. "Officially dead," I croaked.
"Dumbass, get over here and practice some spikes."
"No, I'm dead. Didn't you hear me?"
"You actually will be dead if you keep laying there and I will have been the one that killed you. Now get up." I could feel Kageyama's glare even though I couldn't see him.
"No, I can't go on. Tell my family I love them."
Silence.
I peeked over at Kageyama with one eye and saw him standing there, completely dumbfounded.
"You continue to disappoint me with your stupidity," Kageyama said in a monotone voice. I hauled myself up from the floor and trudged over to Kageyama.
"You're one to talk. I think you gave me a concussion."
"No I didn't, dumbass." Just then Sugawara walked in with Daichi and they looked at us with blank expressions. Daichi sighed.
"Can you guys ever behave yourselves?" Sugawara remarked. Kageyama and I didn't say anything. I managed a weak smile.
"Never mind. Practice will start in 10 minutes. Collect yourselves." Daichi walked toward the changing rooms and Sugawara set his bag down.
"Sorry, captain," Kageyama and I said in unison.
"Why are you so mean to me?" I whispered to Kageyama.
"Why are you such a dumbass?" Kageyama retorted.
"See, this is what I mean." Kageyama looked me hard in the eyes. I returned his stare. As we continued looking at each other, his stare softened. His eyes wandered down to my lips, but I continued to focus my eyes on his. When his eyes made their way back up to meet mine, there was something more intense about his stare. He leansed toward me and my eyes widened, wondering what he could possibly be doing. But just then, Nishinoya-senpai and Tanaka-senpai burst into the gym yelling. Kageyama took several steps back from me as I realized how close we were.
Nishinoya got quiet when he saw us. I could tell that he saw what was going on. Tanaka just continued with his story though.
Suga smiled at them. I had completely forgot that Suga was here, he was so quiet. I didn't know what just happened between me and Kageyama, but I hoped he didn't see it.
"You two are unusually early. Is there something wrong?" Suga asked the two second years. Nishinoya just shrugged, still looking at Kageyama and me.
"My mom kicked me out of the house earlier than usual," Tanaka lamented.
"Well everyone should be getting here soon, so you guys can relax until they do," Sugawara said. I walked over to my bag and pretended to get a drink of water. I wasn't really thirsty, I just wanted to think a little bit without too many interruptions.
Kageyama's POV
PANIC MODE. PANIC MODE.
My head was spinning from my and Hinata's encounter. We had never been that close before except when we accidentally fall asleep on each other during bus rides or when he slams into while trying to block during a game.
I knew I had felt something for Hinata for quite a while now. Something just drew me to him. I couldn't possibly express my feelings though, he would definitely laugh or something and then things would get all awkward. It would probably mess up the dynamic of the team and I would really rather not have that happen.
So I just kept everything to myself, I'd always been good at that.
Nishinoya sauntered over to me and slapped me on the back.
"You look troubled, young child," he said in a pompous voice with a sarcastic smile.
I heard a quiet, "You're only a year older than him," from Sugawara who was all the way across the gym. Nishinoya ignored him.
"Tell me all of your problems." I looked down at Nishinoya who had this face of mock concern and I couldn't help but laugh. "DO NOT LAUGH. YOUR SENPAI IS TRYING TO HELP YOU," Nishinoya shouted and all that did was make me laugh more. It also provoked a snicker from Tanaka.
"I'm sorry," I said, still trying to hold back a laugh.
"I give up! You are an ungrateful kouhai!" Nishinoya started to stalk away.
"No, wait!" I stopped Nishinoya. "I do actually have something to ask you." Nishinoya turned and walked back toward me. "Um, well, I was wondering, um, what do you do if you, um, are pretty sure you like someone but you are afraid to tell them and if you do and it turns out badly it might mess up other people's lives too?" I spat out the last part speaking a mile a minute, but Nishinoya still seemed to understand what I was trying to say. He blinked.
"Oho! You have a crush!" Nishinoya said happily, his eyebrows rising in surprise. "I didn't think you had it in you to care about other people!"
"Shh!" I put a hand on his shoulder and look around.
"Sorry sorry." He waved his hand dismissively. "Yeah, I am probably not the best person to ask, but I would just recommend talking to them about it or making a move, and if it doesn't turn out then things might be a little awkward but you'll get over it, and they'll get over it, and eventually everything will go back to normal." Nishinoya tilted his head at me. "Would you mind telling me who it is?" he asked curiously.
"I would mind very much at this point in time," I stated.
"Okay, okay. Well I hope everything works out."
After practice, Hinata accompanied me on my way home.
"You aren't allowed to pull anything like earlier today," I said, referencing Hinata's fake fall on our race to practice.
"Well, I think you got me back for it." Hinata pulled up his shirt to reveal a growing bruise along his rib cage. As I looked at his chest a small smile forms at my lips. "You should not be pleased about other people's pain!" Hinata exclaimed.
But that wasn't what I was smiling at.
He pulled his shirt back down and frowned at me.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked. I blinked and shook my head.
"Like what?"
"Oh I don't know. Just in a funny way," Hinata explained badly.
"You are the least helpful person ever," I said smiling.
"You know you look nice when you smile like that," Hinata said, readjusting his bag on his shoulder. What the hell? Hinata had never complimented me like that. I tried to hold back, but another smile escaped my lips, wider than before.
"Thanks," I muttered. Hinata smiled at me. His smile was so happy and joyful. I wished I could see that smile every second of every day. My breathing got quicker. Even though the sidewalk had plenty of space, Hinata seemed awfully close to me.
"Hey! Kageyama, do you want to stay over at my place tonight? We don't have school tomorrow and I don't have anything better to do." ((Anyone, am I right??;) jk I don't write smut)) My throat closed up from my concentration on not smiling so much my face hurt.
"Yeah sure," I croaked. Hinata looked at me with one eyebrow raised and an expression that said "you good?" I took a deep breath and recomposed myself. "I need to run by my house to get clothes and stuff though."
"That's cool. Oh, and I had something else to ask you. Do you wanna go out with me?" I froze. He continued, "I've been thinking about it and I think we should. I mean if you don't like me like that it's fine. But I like you." He seemed eerily calm. "And sure, you can be mean and grumpy sometimes and you smile like twice a month and you hit me a lot but I like you I don't know why but you know-" He was rambling. I needed to say something before he backtracked and said something like, "Man never mind you really are an asshole now that I think about it."
"Okay okay yes. Yes, I would like to go out with you. And I don't need you to list all of my flaws, every Saturday I get a text from Tanaka giving me a 'new week resolution.' He's been coming up with them for like 3 months now. It's really damaging to my self esteem," I said. Hinata burst out laughing. He let his head fall onto my shoulder because he couldn't seem to hold himself up because he was laughing too hard.
"I'm sorry." He wiped his eyes. "That's just too funny." I glared at him even though he was not looking at me. I threw my arm around him.
"You aren't allowed to tell anyone because then Tanaka will just start broadcasting his suggestions at every Saturday practice." He rest his arm around me so his hand was sitting on my waist.
We walked toward my house and when we got there he waited outside while I got my stuff. When I got back out, Hinata was sitting on the steps outside the house. I sat down next to him and he leaned his head on my shoulder.
"You are the best boyfriend I've ever had," he said sweetly.
"I'm the only boyfriend you've ever had and I have only been your boyfriend for like 15 minutes."
"That doesn't mean you can't be the best." I got up and hold my hand out to the smaller boy. He took it and I wrapped my arm around his shoulders. I softly kissed him on the forehead.
"Definitely the best."
