Matt's POV
"Lana what happened?" I asked her as we drove to the hospital.
She was sitting there, crying quietly, wiping her face and she was worrying me, a lot.
"Oh." She said, wiping her face again. "A drug addict came into work tonight and when we working on him, he kicked out, got me." She reached out blindly and grabbed hold of my hand.
I took hold of her hand, glancing at her. "And what, kicked you in the stomach?"
She nodded, sniffling. "Yes, I fell over."
"Okay okay." I said softly, squeezing her hand. "Maybe you broke a rib or something." I suggested and she shook her head, wiping at her face again.
"Maybe." She said softly, looking out the window.
"It's okay Lana." I murmured. "It will be okay, they'll know what to do."
Lana looked at me and shook her head again, then she burst into tears.
God, what was going on? She was scaring me. I knew she was tired, but this, this was more than tiredness. Something was seriously wrong with her and that worried me a lot.
We pulled up at the hospital and I parked the car, jumping out and running around the other side to help Lana out of the car. I wasn't sure if she was in pain or what, I just knew that she was still crying.
"Shh." I said softly, pulling her into my arms.
I kissed her softly then guided her towards the entrance. We walked into the ER and looked around. It was actually pretty quiet and we made our way over to the desk where a nurse was seated, looking bored.
She looked up and half smiled as we approached her. "Yes?" She asked.
"My girlfriend needs to see a doctor." I told her, pulling Lana closer.
"Okay sweety." She said smiling. "What's the problem?"
Lana glanced at me, then looked at the nurse. "I got hit tonight at work, pretty hard." She wiped at her face again. "And well." She looked at me, then back at the nurse. "Well I think I'm having a miscarriage."
She said the last part really quickly so at first I didn't think I'd heard her properly.
"Okay." The nurse said softly. "You come on through."
She pressed a buzzer and some doors opened and she got up meeting us at the doors. We followed her and she led us into a cubicle.
"You jump up here." She said to Lana. "One of the nurses will be here shortly." And she went to leave. "Try and relax." She said to Lana, and Lana nodded, biting her lip.
"Isn't she a nurse?" I asked Lana as the nurse left.
"Yeah but she's the triage nurse." She said softly, closing her eye's.
I nodded and glanced around the room, looking, thinking. Did she say miscarriage? I just wasn't really sure.
I opened my mouth to ask her when the curtain pulled back and another nurse walked in smiling.
"Hi, I'm Annie." She announced. "So, tell me what's happening?" She said looking at Lana.
"Um." Lana said biting her lip. "I got hit tonight at work, pretty hard I guess and now I'm bleeding."
I sat back in the chair and listened. I wasn't sure what I was feeling right at this moment.
"So you're pregnant, um?"
"Lana." Lana said quickly.
"So you're pregnant Lana?" She asked her.
I watched as Lana nodded. "About 8 or 9 weeks."
I took a deep breath. Lana was pregnant. Lana knew she was pregnant. Lana knew she was pregnant and never told me. 8 or 9 weeks?
"Okay Lana." She said standing up. "I'm going to take some obs, check you over, then the doctor will be in okay."
Lana nodded and stared at the ceiling, biting her lip while the nurse examined her. I looked at her but she wouldn't meet my eye's, well I guess not now, now her secret was out. Why would she keep this from me?
The nurse finished and left the cubicle and I reached out, taking Lana's hand.
"Lana." I said softly. "Why...." But she cut me off.
"Not now Matt." She whispered. "Please, not now."
I sat back in the chair, fine I wouldn't ask her now, but I wanted to know, know why she hadn't told me. I was a little pissed off about it, no actually, I was a lot pissed off about it.
We sat there silently waiting and finally a doctor came in, introducing himself.
"Lana." He said smiling. "I'm going to have a feel of your stomach, it may be uncomfortable but I need you to relax okay?"
Lana nodded and I watched her close her eye's as he started. He was feeling around her stomach and then he handed her a sheet. She had to drape it over herself and it took me a moment to realise what was going on then. He wanted to examine her and I squeezed her hand as he went about doing what ever he was doing.
A tear ran down Lana's cheek and I reached over, wiping it away.
"Well." He said standing up. "There's definitely some bleeding there Lana." He frowned. "I'm going to do a quick scan, see what's going on."
I nodded, okay she was bleeding and god, was she going to lose this baby, our baby, now that I'd found out about it?
We sat there in silence until the doctor and a nurse came back in, pushing a machine and they murmured amongst themselves as they set it up.
"Okay Lana." Annie, the nurse said smiling. "Try and relax honey."
Lana nodded and gripped my hand tighter and I watched what the doctor was doing. I couldn't really see what he was doing, the sheet was still draped across Lana, but I watched as he leant over and turned the screen on.
"Okay." He said softly, turning to look at the screen.
I watched that screen closely, I had no idea what I was looking at, but I knew we were looking for our baby.
"Ah." The doctor suddenly said. "There we go."
I looked at the screen, trying to see something.
"That." He said pointing. "Is your baby and well, it looks pretty good to me."
Lana sobbed loudly and I looked at her, she had her hands over her face, hiding her tears.
"Okay Lana." The doctor said turning everything off. "Your baby is okay, the heartbeat is strong, yes you're bleeding, but it's nothing major and not a lot." He smiled. "I'd say the hit you took tonight upset something but not your baby. So I want you to go home, rest for a few days and follow this up with your doctor. If the bleeding get's any heavier, or you feel any cramping I want you to come back straight away."
Lana nodded and started sitting up, I wanted to help her but I was little shocked and stunned by everything that had happened. I was going to be a father. Fuck, I was going to be a father.
We both sat there in silence while Annie went to get some paperwork for Lana to take to her doctor. I had a lot to say, here just wasn't the place and I waited until we were back in the car, on the way home.
"How long have you known Lana?" I asked, trying to sound calm.
"A few weeks." She mumbled.
"A few weeks?" I snapped. She'd know a few weeks and hadn't said a word. "And you never thought of mentioning it to me?"
"Matt stop." She cried. "I'm tired and I'm upset and I don't want to talk about it now."
"It seems you don't like to talk about a lot of things." I snapped.
She just looked at me, shaking her head. "Please don't."
I never said a word to her the rest of the drive and when we arrived home we both got straight out of the car, walking inside, still not talking.
"I need sleep." Lana muttered walking into the bedroom
Of course she was right, the sun was coming up and we both needed sleep.
I went and grabbed a drink, thinking about this baby, thinking about Lana and by the time I walked into the bedroom Lana was back in bed, laying on her back with her eye's closed.
I pulled my clothes off and got in, laying there staring at the ceiling. I just couldn't understand why she didn't tell me? It was something so important but she failed to mention it to me. I had a right to know didn't I?
I rolled onto my side, looking at her. She was asleep, snoring softly and for the first time all night she looked relaxed.
Fuck, I was so angry with her, but as I looked at her I couldn't help but smile. I reached out and pulled her against my chest, kissing her forehead softly.
I was going to be a dad. Holy crap, that thought made me so happy and I kissed Lana softly again. Lana was carrying my child and we were going to be parents. I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather have babies with. Damn, I was a lucky guy, a very lucky guy.
I was still pissed at her and she was going to get a piece of my mind, but Lana was carrying my child, my Lana, the girl I loved. Honestly right now, life couldn't get any better.
