Sirius and James went on a magic strike for two weeks in fourth year, they just downright refused to participate in anything that involved magic.
Dumbledore, for some unknown reason, supported this decision whole heartedly, he allowed them to go the the kitchens during meals to make their own food and instructed the house elves not to clean up their possessions, they were even given a physical key to the common room.
Nobody ever knew why they decided to do this.
