Derek’s POV

“I’ve tried her seven times. Where is she?” I growled, pacing cagily in the living room while Isaac floated theories and made some calls. I’d seen Cece disappear upstairs sometime around eight o’clock, after we’d sent away Erica’s boyfriend, and it was now nearly nine-thirty. I was getting increasingly more worried – Erica and Chris had been gone for four and a half hours, and they weren’t answering their phones; it just went straight to voicemail. And despite our earlier fight, I knew Chris would never ignore my calls deliberately if she knew I’d be worried. She must be in trouble. It could be Jackson…or Peter. No, it’s most likely the Argents, and that means she could be hurt. I have to go.

“Isaac, come on – I’m tired of just sitting here, waiting around. Let’s go find them,” I commanded, grabbing my leather jacket off the couch and striding to open the front door. To my utter astonishment, Dean Morgan, a fellow werewolf friend of mine, stood on the other side of the door, hands in pockets.

“Dean, what’re you doing here?”

“Isaac called, said Chris was in trouble. I came to help,” he responded as if it was the most natural thing in the world for him to be concerned about my fiancée. A low growl built up in the back of my throat, but I suppressed it, figuring we had a better chance of rescuing Chris and Erica with his added strength and battle skills. Let it go. They’re friends. That’s all, I told myself forcefully, trying with all my heart to believe it. But with all the troubles Chris and I had been having lately, I couldn’t help but think that she was going to turn to Dean for comfort and just like that, I’d be replaced. I did smell him all over the bed yesterday…Trying to shake it off, I started the engine and quickly backed out of the driveway, figuring the best place to start looking would be the Argents’.

The instant we arrived in the woods, I paired myself up with Isaac to scope out the back of the house while Dean went to the front door. As far as the Argents knew, Dean was just a friend of Chris’s, the psychology teacher and assistant basketball coach at Beacon Hills High, and completely human. He had the best chance of searching out the house, finding Chris’s smell, and then texting me her whereabouts. Then Isaac and I were going to bust in, get Erica and Chris, and get out. I just hoped it would be that easy.

Chris’s POV

I struggled persistently against the ropes that bound me to the chair I was sitting on, but it was no use. I should’ve known – if Erica couldn’t get out of her bindings, I definitely wouldn’t be able to. After capturing us from the Thai restaurant, the Argents had put us in their SUV (looking back, I’d been idiotic not to notice it when we parked) and taken us back to their house, where we’d been tied up and left alone in the basement for about an hour. Now there was a hunter I didn’t know asking us all sorts of questions; about Derek, about the pack, about Peter’s resurrection. Mostly questions I didn’t know the answers to, although Erica certainly did.

“Come on, sweetheart, I know the Big Bad Wolf must’ve told his girlfriend something about his uncle. Now, how did Peter rise from the grave?”

“I already told you, I don’t know,” I sighed, fighting off the instinct to cry. As much as I wished Derek would just burst through that door and save us, I knew in my heart that would just cause more trouble. The Argents were not to be messed with, especially not since they still had leftover grudges against Derek for killing Mrs. Argent. There had been an unspoken truce after they’d killed Boyd, but I knew if given the chance, Allison or her dad wouldn’t hesitate to put a bullet right through Derek’s skull.

“Now that I just don’t believe,” the hunter remarked before backhanding me hard across the face. I screamed as agony blossomed over my left cheekbone, instinctively reaching my hand up to ease the throbbing pain before I remembered that my wrists were bound behind my back, leaving me vulnerable. A couple tears did escape down my cheeks now, and I tried fiercely to blink back the others.

“Hey jackass! Why don’t you ask me, I’m the one whose actually in his pack, remember?” Erica yelled, struggling against the chains around her arms and legs. The hunter slowly walked over to her, giving me one last glare before he straight-up punched Erica in the face, without warning. Erica didn’t scream, but when the hunter drew back I could see blood trickling from a spot right above her right eyebrow. Within seconds, it had healed to almost nothing. Unfortunately for her, this only acted as encouragement for the hunter who started to focus in on my friend.

“So, pretty eyes, why don’t you tell me about your Alpha, Derek?” he hissed, stroking his hand down the left side of Erica’s face in a sickening caress that made her shudder.

“Well, he’s about six foot, black hair, sort of chronically angry looking?” she said sarcastically, which earned her a hard slap across the face. Although Erica’s cuts and bruises were all healing, I was pretty sure I had a nasty shiner brewing on my left eye.

“And how about you, princess? Can you tell me anything interesting about your boyfriend?”

“He’s great in the bedroom,” I smirked, but my victory only lasted a short two seconds before the hunter’s face grew dark and he hit me so hard that I fell backwards in my chair. I smacked my head against the cement floor, and then everything went black.

Derek’s POV

“Come on, this way,” I whispered to Isaac, circling around the back of the Argent’s house and approaching the basement door. Just as I was about to peek through the window, my phone vibrated with a text from Dean.

Just heard her scream – she’s in the basement, it read, and I growled darkly. If they’ve so much as laid one finger on my fiancée, I will rip apart every person in this house, I promised silently, leading Isaac to the basement window to look in. Not surprisingly, we could only see the tips of somebody’s dark hair and then, a little further back, Erica’s blonde head. Where’s Chris?

“Do you see Chris?” I asked Isaac in a hushed voice, and he shook his head no.

“But I’m sure if Erica’s in there, so is Chris.”

“You’re probably right. We’re going in,” I snarled, before lashing out with my foot and smashing the window without hesitation. Quick as a flash, Isaac and I jumped down into the basement, hastily taking in our surroundings. We were by the stairs, and Erica was tied to a chair closest to us, with a man crouched down in front of her aggressively. My eyes searched out Chris’s red hair, splayed across the floor from where she lay, also tied to a chair, but on the ground as though she’d been pushed backwards. She was out cold.

Without having to communicate, Isaac immediately lunged for the hunter, covering his mouth and knocking him out before he could scream and alert the others in the house. Dean’s job was to keep the Argents upstairs occupied so they wouldn’t get suspicious and check on their hostages, so we had to do all we could to make the task easier for him. Simultaneously, I rushed over to Chris, slashing the ropes that bound her and lifting her up into my arms. Her fair skin was bruised all over her face, and there was blood oozing from a cut on the back of her head. Although every nerve in my body was aching to go over to the hunter and tear him to shreds, I let Isaac take care of him quietly and a little more professionally. Then he released Erica and together, the three of us managed to get Chris’s limp form up and out of the basement window without attracting any attention. Unfortunately for us, the minute we got above ground, we were faced with three hunters who must’ve been doing rounds or something. In an instant, I shoved Chris into Erica’s arms and took up a protective stance in front of them. Isaac snarled, completely wolfing out and attacking the first hunter while the second two came after me and Erica. My emotions fueled the adrenaline rush in my body now as I lashed out and knocked the two men unconscious within seconds. Again, I squelched the urge to rip their throats out with my claws in favor of scooping Chris back into my embrace and sprinting to the safety of the car. I didn’t know how long she’d been out but I did know she needed to see a doctor as soon as possible. We all piled into the car and stalled just past the Argents house to wait for Dean, who came jogging down the street not two minutes later.

“Okay Isaac, now drive,” I growled urgently, looking down at Chris’s pale face; there was less color than usual, and I was worried due to the head injury she’d sustained. She could have a concussion, internal bleeding, or a cerebral hemorrhage. Please be okay, I thought desperately, running my fingers through Chris’s incredibly soft auburn hair and kissing her forehead delicately. You have to be okay.

Chris’s POV

When I came to, I found my senses fighting against a searing bright light and the smell of excessive alcoholic cleaning clogging my nostrils. God I hate hospitals, I thought grumpily, scrunching my eyes together to block out some of the brightness. What the hell is that for, anyway?

“You’re awake.”

I turned my head to see my fiancé sitting tensely in the chair by my bed, both hands wrapped around my left one. Derek looked awful; he had dark bags piled underneath his glazed green eyes, his face was paler than mine, and what looked to be permanent worry lines were etched into his forehead.

“Hey,” I croaked, my voice so thick I barely recognized it. Clearing my throat vigorously, I tried again. “Hey.”

“How’re you feeling?” Derek said gently, moving forward to cup the side of my face in a careful caress. I smiled weakly, the throbbing pain in my head returning twofold; the last thing I remembered was being punched by the hunter before everything went black. I must have hit my head or something.

“Um, not too bad. My head hurts like a bitch, though.”

Derek didn’t smile. “I’ll go get Dr. Deaton. Just hang tight for a sec.” And he disappeared out the door, which I could clearly see from where I lay, propped up against about a million pillows. Looking around, I realized I was in fact in my own bed at Derek’s. The TV was on and playing a re-run of last week’s True Blood. Wait, I haven’t seen this episode, I suddenly realized, reaching for the remote that was on the bedside table and turning the volume up. With mounting horror, I realized that I’d missed Friday’s True Blood while I was unconscious. And that got me wondering just how long I’d been unconscious. It couldn’t have been more than a couple hours, tops. Let’s see, it was Thursday night when we got kidnapped, which meant I could’ve been unconscious until Friday night. It’s probably Saturday. The instant Derek returned, trailed by Dr. Deaton, I blurted out the burning question.

“What day is it?”

“Christina, you suffered a very serious head trauma,” the doctor began gently, coming over to sit lightly on the bed beside me and feel my forehead. I couldn’t help but notice, however, that that didn’t answer my question.

Okay, but I still want to know what today is,” I insisted, looking to Derek this time. His expression was grave and tinged with grief, which didn’t seem encouraging.

“Chris, it’s Wednesday night. You were unconscious for nearly a week,” he finally told me, walking around the bed to take my other hand. As I let that sink in, tears sprung up in my eyes. It’s Wednesday…I’ve been out for seven days? No. Oh my God.

“It’s not as bad as you must be thinking, Christina. You just suffered from a pretty serious concussion, but it could’ve been much worse. Consider yourself lucky,” Dr. Deaton said, reaching into his pocket to take out three bottles of pills.

“Now, you’ll need to take one pill from each bottle every eight hours until you run out, okay?”

I nodded mutely, unable to summon up the words to respond. I couldn’t believe a little bump on the head had caused me to be in a mini-coma!

“And just so you know, you’ll have to stay out of school for another three weeks, until your brain heals itself. And even when you do go back, no sports or excessive movement for another month or so.”

“What about the baby?” I asked hoarsely, terror gripping my mind. Oh no. Oh God, please no. Please let my baby be okay. Please. Derek squeezed my hand, smiling a little to soothe me.

“The baby’s fine. He gave you an ultrasound just to be sure.”

“Oh, thank God,” I mumbled, letting a tear escape down my cheek this time. The relief I felt upon hearing that was so great it shocked even me. Derek leaned forward to wrap his arms around me tightly, allowing me to rest my face in the crook of his neck and just relax.

“Well, I’ll just leave you two alone. Call me if there are any complications,” Dr. Deaton announced before I heard the click of the door shutting. I pulled back a bit so I could stare into Derek’s glittering, however bloodshot eyes. I leaned forward to press my lips against his softly, making the kiss slow and passionate, and he responded more than willingly. Gosh it’s been forever since we’ve kissed, I realized vaguely in the back of my mind as Derek’s tongue massaged mine and sent shivers down my arms. When I finally broke the kiss, I leaned my forehead against Derek’s and tried to catch my breath.

“Well someone’s feeling better,” Derek said in his deep, rumbling voice, and I couldn’t help but chuckle. He smiled at me faintly, pressing a kiss onto my forehead delicately.

“Come here,” I mumbled, sliding over in bed to let Derek crawl in beside me. He wrapped both arms around my torso, holding me tightly against his chest. I was warm and cozy in the circle of my fiancé’s strong arms, and slowly, muscle by muscle, I began to relax and grow sleepy again. How is it that I’m exhausted already? I just slept for a week!

“Mmm…Derek?”

“Yeah, babe?” he whispered softly, stroking back my hair and kissing me on the forehead again.

“I’m sorry for all the fighting. You know I still love you, right?”

“Of course. I’m sorry, too, Chris, and I love you. Always, no matter what, you remember that okay?”

“Mm ’kay. Night,” I sighed, turning over to press my lips against Derek’s bicep gently before I felt myself being sucked back into nothingness.
