INT. OLYMPIC APARTMENT COMPLEX - ITALY - LATER
Lainey and her Mom enter. The lobby is bustling with athletes.
OLIVIA
Wow, it's like the perfect human specimen convention.
Lainey looks around at all of the good-looking athletes. They head to check-in.
INT. OLYMPIC APARTMENT COMPLEX - CHECK-IN - SECONDS LATER
Lainey presents her credentials. She and her Mom notice a glass jar of condoms sitting on the table.
OLIVIA
I guess sex is an official Olympic sport.
OLYMPIC CHECK-IN REP
It's good to be safe.
Lainey smiles as she's handed a welcome bag.
OLYMPIC CHECK-IN REP (CONT'D)
Ciao. (to Olivia) They're free.
OLIVIA
I'm married.
A HOT MALE ATHLETE walks up and dumps a bunch of condoms in his bag and then winks at Lainey.
LAINEY
This is going to be interesting.
Lainey and her Mom grab their suitcases and head to the elevator.
INT. OLYMPIC STADIUM - OPENING CEREMONIES - BACKSTAGE - NIGHT
ANNOUNCERS introduce athletes from around the world to a SCREAMING CROWD. Lainey stands with her FELLOW AMERICAN ATHLETES in their Team USA Olympic uniforms ready to enter the stadium. She sees the U.S. Men's Ski Team but doesn't see Cory. Their group starts moving toward the entrance to the stadium and the excited fans.
As they enter the stadium, an emotional Lainey wipes away a tear.
EXT. OLYMPIC VILLAGE - NIGHT
Cory walks around the Olympic Village and runs into a group of PARTYING ATHLETES.
PARTYING ATHLETE #1
Hey, it's Cory Murphy! This guy's a gold medalist--THREE TIMES!
PARTYING ATHLETE #2
Impressive man. Can't wait to see what you do this week.
CORY
You guys heading to a party?
PARTYING ATHLETE #2
Yeah, come on.
They walk off together.
INT. PARTY VILLA - NIGHT
Vodka shots flow and the music pumps in the living room.
INT. PARTY VILLA - HOT TUB - NIGHT
Cory's with TWO SEXY FEMALE HOCKEY PLAYERS in a hot tub. He offers them shots of tequila.
FEMALE HOCKEY PLAYER #1
No thanks, we have a game in two days. We really want to work off this pre-game tension though. Are you interested in giving us a hand?
She leans over and kisses Cory while the other rubs them both.
INT. LAINEY'S OLYMPIC APARTMENT - NIGHT
Lainey wakes up and looks over at the clock. It's 3 a.m. She gets up quietly and throws on some tights and a thin sweater. She grabs her skating bag and heads out the door.
EXT. OLYMPIC VILLAGE - NIGHT
The wind is fierce as Lainey walks. It's quiet as all of the athletes rest. And it's starting to snow.
CORY (O.C.)
Hi.
Lainey jumps. She turns around, disgusted to see it's Cory. She keeps walking.
CORY (CONT'D)
Where are you going?
Lainey shows him her bag with her skates.
CORY (CONT'D)
This early? Shouldn't you be sleeping? Aren't you jet-lagging?
LAINEY
Have you even been to sleep yet?
CORY
What do you think?
Lainey stops and looks him in the eyes.
LAINEY
So what's the point?
CORY
What do you mean?
LAINEY
I mean, why are you here? I'm sure there were other skiers you beat to get here. Why not give that unlucky guy you squeezed out, your spot, if you don't care to be here?
CORY
It never occurred to me.
Lainey starts walking again. Cory follows.
CORY (CONT'D)
You shouldn't be out here alone.
LAINEY
I'll be fine. Look at all of the security.
She points at a couple of SECURITY GUARDS at a nearby building.
CORY
Ah, you're going rogue.
LAINEY
I'm not going rogue.
CORY
You don't think I know going rogue when I see it? I am the definition of rogue. Come on, what are you planning that you don't want your coach to know?
LAINEY
Again, none of your business.
CORY
Maybe I can help.
LAINEY
Not possible.
Cory grabs Lainey's skate bag from her shoulder.
CORY
Here, let me--
LAINEY
What are you doing? Give me that.
Lainey reaches for her bag, forcing her chest against his.
CORY
You intrigue me.
LAINEY
You disgust me. Give me my bag.
CORY
Come clean and I will.
LAINEY
If you don't give me my bag, I'm going to scream and have you arrested.
CORY
Okay, okay, calm down.
Cory hands Lainey her bag. She grabs it and takes off. Cory runs after her.
LAINEY
You must not have many friends.
CORY
Oh, I have friends. Lots of 'em.
LAINEY
You can't count fans as friends.
Cory winces.
EXT. OLYMPIC ICE CENTER - NIGHT
They finally get to the ice rink. A RINK GUARD stands. Lainey turns to Cory.
LAINEY
I've got it from here.
CORY
I'll make sure you get inside.
Lainey walks up to the Rink Guard.
RINK GUARD
The rink's closed.
LAINEY
Is there any way I can get in to practice?
RINK GUARD
No.
Cory looks at Lainey and then at the Rink Guard.
RINK GUARD (CONT'D)
Are you Cory Murphy?
Cory smiles.
CORY
The one and only.
RINK GUARD
Oh dude, I'm a huge fan.
The guard reaches out his hand; Cory shakes it.
RINK GUARD (CONT'D)
Hey, can I get a selfie?
He pulls out his phone. Lainey looks annoyed. Cory takes the Rink Guard to the side.
LAINEY (to herself)
Unbelievable...
The Rink Guard nods in agreement to whatever Cory's saying. He suddenly opens the rink.
RINK GUARD
One hour.
Lainey looks at Cory in surprise. She heads inside. Cory follows.
LAINEY
What did you say to him?
CORY
I promised he could get into any party he wanted.
LAINEY
And he believed you?
CORY
Well, I can get him into any party.
Cory opens the door to the rink for Lainey. She looks him in the eye.
LAINEY
Do you always get what you want?
CORY
No, not always.
Cory steadies his gaze with hers.
CORY (CONT'D)
After you then.
Cory directs Lainey toward the dark arena. The Rink Guard turns on the lights. The arena is breathtaking and without a crowd, it looks like it could swallow them whole.
Lainey sheds her jacket and track pants and quickly puts on her skates. She glides onto the perfectly smooth ice.
To warm up, she moves her body through a seamless dance sequence. She's a vision on the ice. Cory drinks her in.
She increases her speed for another jump and goes for it. She jumps up into the air 1 – 2 – 3 and a half and lands firmly on her right leg.
She smiles huge. Cory's clapping and whistling. She skates over to him, laughing.
CORY (CONT'D)
Wow, how many revolutions was that?
LAINEY
Three and a half.
CORY
Shit, that's impressive. I don't know how you do it.
LAINEY
After about a gazillion years in a harness and falling on my ass and even then, many times, I can't do it. Landing a triple axel is like magic.
CORY
Looked like magic too. Bring it!
Cory holds his hand up to high five. Lainey slaps his hand. She laughs and looks out at the ice with concern.
LAINEY
Now I need to try my quad.
CORY
Four revolutions? Hey, what about one of those fancy back flips?
LAINEY
Well, I can, but they're illegal in the Olympics.
CORY
Ah, then nevermind. If you can't do it, you should just say so.
LAINEY
I accept that challenge.
She pushes herself off the boards and back on the ice and picks up speed. Cory grins, ever more intrigued by Lainey. After a couple of times around, Lainey picks the ice with her skate and launches into a back flip.
On the way back down she over-rotates and lands hard on her back, banging her head on the ice. She slides a few feet. She's motionless.
Cory jumps the boards. He reaches her and crouches down by her side. He touches the back of her head. No blood.
CORY
Lainey, are you okay? Can you hear me?
Lainey opens her eyes.
CORY (CONT'D)
How many fingers am I holding up?
LAINEY
I can see. I can hear. I'm good.
CORY
How many fingers?
Lainey concentrates.
LAINEY
Three.
Cory grabs her. He's shaking.
LAINEY (CONT'D)
Cory, it's alright.
Cory grabs her tighter. He puts his arms around her and clings to her.
LAINEY (CONT'D)
Hey, hey, I'll be fine.
CORY (whispers)
Don't die on me, okay? I couldn't handle it if you died.
Lainey pulls away from Cory's arms and looks him straight in the eyes.
LAINEY
I'm not going to die. Really, I've had much worse falls.
She stands up to show him that nothing's wrong.
LAINEY (CONT'D)
See, I'm absolutely fine.
She helps Cory stand on the ice. A tear falls onto his cheek. He wipes it away quickly. Lainey notices.
LAINEY (CONT'D)
I think you need to get some rest.
CORY
Yeah, we should go.
LAINEY
I'm not going anywhere.
Lainey takes off and keeps practicing. Cory heads back to the stands.
Lainey sets up to do a quad but then bails at the last minute.
INT. OLYMPIC ICE CENTER - LATER
Lainey stands over Cory, who's passed out asleep in the stands.
LAINEY
Are you going to sleep in here all day?
Cory stirs. He sits up.
CORY
You done?
LAINEY
No, I'm not going to leave until they kick me out. But it's light out now so I think you can go.
Cory checks his watch.
CORY
Shit.
LAINEY
What's wrong?
CORY
I have to be on the mountain soon. You're okay, right?
Cory stands.
LAINEY
Yes, I'm fine. Thanks.
Cory takes off. Lainey watches him go. Olivia enters with the Rink Guard.
RINK GUARD
Is this your--?
OLIVIA
Oh thank God. You're alive!
Lainey exits the ice and starts taking off her skates.
OLIVIA (CONT'D)
What were you thinking sneaking out like that? I almost called the polizia.
LAINEY
The police? Mom, you're overreacting. I didn't sneak out. I wanted some extra ice time.
OLIVIA
Don't scare me like that, okay? Prison in a foreign country is no joke.
LAINEY
Prison? You're so wound up.
OLIVIA
I'm a bit on edge. But we're at the Olympics. It's a mother's job to worry. How do your legs feel? Should we get you a massage this morning?
Lainey grabs her things and they start to head out.
LAINEY
I think you may need a massage more than me.
