1942 (fourth year)
Venus had grown more prettier by the year. All the boys had a crush on her, and all the girls despised her for it. She had become more popular than ever and was made the number one most smartest student in Hogwarts. Which made Tom rage, for he was passionate about beating the young ravenclaw.
People had seen their rivalry since day one, they would frequently share glares and end up battling eachother for who was right in lessons, mainly DADA and potions. Which both of them were the favourites of Slughorn and Professor Merrythought. Every ravenclaw looked up to her but to her distaste, everyone liked Tom aswell.
Venus was polite where Tom wasn't, everyone could see the tension whenever the two came into contact. Once in History of Magic class Professor Binns couldn't get them under control because both of them said the same thing at the same time, it was crazy.
All the girls had an eye for Tom Riddle, Venus did think he was good looking, but looks didn't deceive her from what really lied within him.
Headmaster Dippet even had to call them in to get their rivalry under control, he could see they were sworn enemies for years now and he tried but couldn't help the situation.
Tom was always jealous because he would always be awarded second place in everything.
Tom was at the Slytherin table eating quietly as Abraxas, Orion and all his other friends and followers joined.
'Hey, you know..I know you have a rivalry with that girl Venus, but could you introduce me..you know, get on a first name basis' Rudolphus told Tom who clenched his jaw and gripped his fork.
'Certainly not.' Tom replied through gritted teeth watching the girl smile and talk to her friends, mainly Mrytle.
'Look at her, all perfect and smart. How much I would love to see her face darken when I beat her' Tom mumbled glaring at her from across the Great Hall
'Your still on that, Tom? We all know your jealous of her but she doesn't have to be the only thing you talk about, it's like you have a hate crush on her' Octavian Nott giggled
'Do you want to live another day,Nott? Becuase if you do don't dare say another word' Tom seethed
He backed down at once. Parkinson strolled over batting her fake eyelashes at Tom.
'Hey, Tom I was wondering if you, you know maybe wanted to go to—' she started
'No' he cut her off not even tearing his gaze of hate at Venus.
She immediately started running away crying.
'Why do you reject every girl? If I were you I'd be fucking every one of them' Abraxas stated
'Well I'm not like that. I'm logical and choose very wisely and smartly, something you don't posses, Malfoy' Tom snapped
Venus then caught his eye from across the room, they held that intense stare, his dark ones colliding with her hazel ones. A frown appeared on her face and Tom scowled, but inside he wanted to know more about her.
'Looking at Riddle again?' Mrytle hiccuped next to Venus over on the Ravenclaw table
'What! No, he was staring at me first and you think I'm going to loose a staring game?' Venus turned to Mrytle
'You think everything is a game, Venus. I bet he likes you. I can tell from a mile away' she squealed
'Haven't you seen? Myrtle you have glasses yet your still blind! We have been fighting like old people since I stepped foot in here! We are enemies and have an immense rivalry with one another! We have hatred towards one another but I still manage to beat him in everything' Venus smirks glancing at Tom who was staring at her
'If I were you I'd love to try and get Tom Riddle's attention, no other girl can get it. But I don't know why you can' Mrytle asked
'Your a Ravenclaw, it's because I'm better at him than everything, now come on we have class' Venus said getting up
'Alright! But wait I need to finish my toast' Mrytle stuffed toast in her mouth before walking next to her.
'Ugh! Potions! I can't stand it no longer' Mrytle whined
'Professor Slughorn isn't that bad. Professor Binns is worse, never forget that' Venus smirked
As the two were walking down the hall they both got stopped by the Slytherin boys. Including Tom Riddle.
'Yes?' Venus asked raising her eyebrow
'Ladies, can we have the finest pleasure to walk you to your class?' Abraxas had a smug face
'No thank you.No wonder why girls don't like you, Malfoy is that you are too big for you boots, now can I have the finest pleasure to tell you to get the fuck out of my way' Venus rolled her eyes and shoved passed them all. Venus glanced back to see Tom looking curiously at her. All the boys started sniggering about how she used her intellect to make Malfoy's comment hit back at him, she used what he had said. Even Tom cracked a little smirk
Mrytle and Venus entered the classroom and got out their books.
'Riddle has been looking at you a lot recently' Mrytle whispered
Soon Slughorn saw them as everyone soon flooded the classroom.
'Ah Venus m'girl! Oh and Tom m'boy' Venus looked to see Tom walk in, his features were very sharp and he was undoubtedly handsome, his beautiful curly hair was to die for, much as she didn't want to admit it.
She heard Mrytle squeal and others at his prideful entrance, but what shocked everyone more was that he didn't walk over to his followers, but took his place standing next to Venus.
He didn't look at anyone but just looked at the Professor infront of them, Venus felt herself tense up. Why was Riddle doing this?!
Slughorn then clapped his hands and held up a tiny vial in his hand and showed it to everyone.
'Now can anybody tell me what this is' he scanned the room
Like always, Venus's and Tom's hand flew up like lightning
'Ah yes, if you will Miss Ravenclaw' he smiled at Venus as she felt him glare at her
'That is the Polyjuice Potion,sir.The Polyjuice Potion, which is a complex and time-consuming concoction, is best left to highly skilled witches and wizards. It enables the consumer to assume the physical appearance of another person, as long as they have first procured part of that individual's body to add to the potion. It is very complex to make, even adults struggle to perfect this potion because it has two separate parts that contained steps for each part. When its brewing was complete, the potion had to be stewed for a month before usage.' Venus stated proudly as many looked at her in admiration
Tom rolled his eyes as Slughorn looked most impressed
'Well, I couldn't have said it better myself! Fifteen points to Ravenclaw!' Slughorn announces as I heard 'yes' whispers from the Ravenclaw's . Mrytle nudged me smiling.
'Now can anybody tell me what ingredients you need for this potion?' Slughorn asked as he expected Venus and Tom's hand went straight up
'Go on Tom' Slughorn smiled as it was Venus's turn to scowl at him
'Fluxweed, Knotgrass, Leeches, Lacewing flies, Horn of Bicorn,Boomslang skin and a piece of the person you're turning into' Tom smirked side glancing at a angry Venus
'Excellent Tom! Ten points to Slytherin' he announced
Slughorn flicked through his own book of potions
'Now I don't expect anyone to get this potion right, but get into pairs and start brewing!' He smiled
Venus looked to Mrytle but someone tapped her shoulder, it was the infamous Tom Riddle.
'It would give me great pleasure to hope you get this potion wrong' he said sternly
'Wow, I hope you do too' Venus smiled falsely
'Oh by the way, I was actually going to put you all in pairs myself!' Slughorn announced as they all groaned he started sorting everyone into their pairs
'Let's see, Malfoy and Warren, Dolohov with Highcastle, Howard and Black, and finally Ravenclaw and Riddle' he declared
Venus felt her jaw drop.
'No way, I'm not brewing with him' she obligated
'What? Can't handle a challenge,smartypants?' Tom smirked wickedly
'Don't call me that Riddle or I'll—' Venus got cut off by Slughorn
'Now I know you two aren't on a best friend basis but for me, just this once' he looked from Venus to Tom
'I'm not going to like it' Venus scoffed
Tom just stood there looking at her.
'Well what are you waiting for? I'll grab the leeches, fluxweed and knotgrass and you will get the lacewing flies, horn of bicorn and boomslang skin' Venus explains
'I don't take demands' he says coldly
'It wasn't a demand, if you want to get the highest grade, but obviously I will beat you like every other year. Do you want that to happen? If you don't get moving' Venus retorted
Apart of Tom found her most aggravating, but nobody dared to backchat him. Not even his own peers, and he liked that fierce fighter spirit. But he didn't let his show. He didn't say anything more and he got what he needed and she got hers.
They went over to a cauldron, Tom was 2x as tall as her
'Right, it says add 4 leeches to the cauldron.
Add 2 scoops of lacewing flies to the mortar, crush to a fine paste, then add 2 measures of the crushed lacewings to the cauldron.Heat for 30 seconds on a low heat.Wave your wand to complete this stage of the potion.' Venus read from the book
They both did some things until he stopped her crushing up the lacewings.
'What are you doing?' She asked
'Saving our grade' he scoffed before placing his cold hands on hers and crushing it in a split second rather than a whole minute, Venus didn't deny she felt electricity fly through her veins. But she wonders is Tom had felt it too. But little did she knew he did, it made him question love. Why did he care so much for the girl even if he hated her?
'I can do it myself, Riddle' she sneered
'You needed help' he taunted
'Did not!' She rejected his accusation
'Did to!' He smirked
'Heat it now' Venus told him as they added all the contents into the cauldron
Tom looked at the potions book and realised
'Are you stupid?! You read the wrong instruction! Now look what you done! Honestly do I have to everything myself?! I should be praised more than you seeming your too dumb to even see that it was wrong' he half shouted at Venus
'I didn't mean to, Riddle. If you hadn't of realised sooner and told me then we could of salvaged it, plus you decided to listen to me' she stated
'Add 3 measures of fluxweed to the cauldron.Add 2 bundles of knotgrass to the cauldron.Stir 4 times, clockwise.Wave your wand then let potion brew for 80 minutes' Tom read from the book slamming it on the table which made everyone jump. He sighed and put his two fingers to the bridge of his nose rubbing it, he looked at his wrist for the time
'There is still time to actually get this done. We need to work functionally and efficiently, if we want to actually brew it properly. Hopefully our little Ravenclaw gets it right this time' he death glared Venus
'You know you don't have to be so spiteful. This is why you can't make any friends! You accuse and make them feel shit a lot, probably because you might of had a bad past or something' she mumbled as he shot a look at her
His eyes were gloomy, he looked around. It was almost like he had been in a trance. She noticed she must had pulled a string in his black rotten heart. She instantly felt bad
'Riddle, you know if you want to brew it right, you have to stop staring at me. To me I think you have a crush on me' Venus chuckled
'No, your a little worthless scum that gets in my way' he replied lowly coming out of his trance.
'Ouch, well. I won't be so sure about that, I'm still better than you' she teased
'I will get you one day, Ravenclaw' he pointed at me
They fell into an awkward silence and we both worked silently. Soon Slughorn came over and took one look and he averted his gaze towards her and Tom
'M-Merlins beard! I haven't seen two fourth years ever brew it correctly! I will be telling Headmaster Dippet and it will be noted!' He smiled
Venus nodded in gratitude as I looked to see Tom give her a small nod.
Venus rushed out to meet Mrytle, Frank, Fleamont, Euphemia and Alice in the courtyard when somebody grabbed her wrist
She spun around to see Tom
'What do you want Tom?' She asked
'You, Slughorn set us some research homework and he insisted we do it with our partners. Library 9pm.' He told me before going the opposite way. He glanced back at Venus. He was curious about her, he wanted to know more! He wanted everything to do with her! It was like she was his pain goal, he has to figure her out! She wasn't like any other witch. She was extraordinarily smart and naturally good at everything. She was powerful and beautiful. It came into questioning why he even was even to associate with her.
However she was lost in thought about why Tom wanted to be near her. Was he using her? Or was he trying to mend their rocky relationship. He was mysterious and one of a kind. She has never met a person like him before, and he was intoxicating and charming . But he was ruthless and cold. But how can such a handsome face hide some much. This what she wanted to figure out in Tom Riddle.
Tom wrote in his diary a lot about Venus Ravenclaw. But not bad things, more logical things that would help him into becoming a great sorcerer. It was her, he needed her to succeed. To research things! But some of his notes actually complimented her and talked about her beauty and how he would get jealous of her when Abraxas tried to hit on her.
But like he'd ever dare to let anyone hear his private thoughts. He was emotionless, he never told a single soul about how he truly felt towards the heir of Ravenclaw.
But could he really think he would be falling for his enemy?
He needs to think logically. How to gain her trust? Mrytle? No he thought, then the library came into mind.
He would try to gain her trust.
