Chapter 14: Crying Wolf

No one's POV
Ariana's cell phone went off, waking her and Caroline up. Caroline promptly pushed Ariana out of the bed, annoyed at being woken up.
Ariana landed on the floor and looked back up at Caroline with an annoyed expression at being shoved off of the bed. She crawled across the floor towards her phone and took it off the dresser. Ariana answered her phone.
"Hello?"
"Shhh, Ari!" Caroline complained tiredly.
Sighing, Ariana dragged herself out of Caroline's room and continued her conversation in the hallway.
"How was the sleepover?" It was Nathan on the other end of the phone.
"Good and much needed. When can you and I have one?"
"Mmm. That can be arranged."
"Okay. Now. Today. Take me far, far away."
"Even with everything that's going on?"
"Because of everything that's going on."
"And you're sure this has nothing to do with dodging your father who just got into town?"
"Uh, this has everything to do with that."
"Well, in that case, where would you like to go?"
Ariana smiled.

Nathan and Ariana were in the hallway with their bags packed, ready to leave. Elena was currently at the Salvatore house with Stefan.
"Ready for our romantic weekend?" Nathan smiled.
"Beyond ready. Let's go before John shows up and pretends to be a concerned father." Ariana sighed.
"I'll go put these in the car." Nathan opened the front door and started to walk out, but stopped when he heard Ariana's phone start to buzz. Ariana took out her phone, seeing that she had received a text message from Caroline.

Need to talk. Where are you?

Headed to lakehouse w Nathan. U ok?
"Uh, please tell me there's nothing wrong." Nathan murmured. Ariana looked up at Nathan, but before she had time to comment, Caroline sent her another text.

All good, never mind. Have fun.
Ariana looked relieved and sent a text back.

"Nothing's wrong. Just Caroline." Ariana reassured her boyfriend. "Come on. Let's go."
Ariana walked out the front door. Ariana shut the door behind them and followed her.

Elena was hanging at the Salvatore house with Stefan. They were watching a movie, but Elena had been on her phone during the last half, texting Ariana.

"I need to use the bathroom." Elena told Stefan, who nodded and gave her a kiss on the beach, causing Elena to smile. She got up and went to the bathroom.
After doing everything she needed to do in there, Elena washed her hands, glancing at her reflection in the mirror, when a noise was heard outside the door.
"Stefan?" Elena called softly, giggling at the thought that Stefan was trying to scare her. "Nice try, Stefan, but it won't work."
Elena opened the door, grinning, expecting to be met with a smiling Stefan. But the second that she opened the door, all Elena was met with was darkness.

Nathan and Ariana pulled up to the lake house in Ariana's car.
They got out of the car and went up to the house. Ariana unlocked the front door and walked in. She looked around nostalgically and walked further into the house.
Nathan, right behind her, came up on the porch and stood awkwardly at the front door. Ariana placed her bags on a counter and looked over at Nathan.
"You don't have to wait out there."
"Oh, that's great, because I'm, uh... I'm stuck." Nathan muttered.
"Oh, my god. You can't get in." Ariana realised.
"Not gonna be a very romantic weekend unless you, uh, invite me inside." Nathan chuckled.
"Stefan, I can't." Ariana frowned. Nathan's eyebrows rose in surprise. "My parent's left this place to John Gilbert. He's the only one who can invite you in. I'm sorry. I — I completely forgot."
"You're kidding me, right?" Nathan sighed. Ariana looked at him seriously for a moment, but finally cracked a smile.
"Nathan Salvatore, I hereby invite you into this home."
"You little minx." Nathan entered the house and picked Ariana up.
Ariana giggled and kissed him, wrapping her legs around his waist as he carried her over and placed her on the counter. Nathan slid his left hand down the right side of her body. They continued to kiss passionately.

Ariana was outside, on the dock, a blanket wrapped around her. Nathan approached her from behind. He wrapped his arms around Ariana and kissed her cheek. Ariana smiled.
"Elena broke her arm diving off this dock when we were six. My dad taught me how to fish right off the edge over there. I even taught Jeremy how to swim here as I was always a strong swimmer and he wasn't. So many memories." Ariana explained. "Do you ever think about us, what our future will be like, our memories?"
"I think there are a lot of conversations to be had about our future, about the kind of life we could have together." Nathan replied.
"Now there's a box that we shouldn't open." Ariana chuckled.
"Oh, we can open it. Whenever you're ready." Nathan said.
"No. I'd rather just be here. Now." Ariana smiled.
"You know, this is a future memory. It's where your boyfriend whispered to you that he loved you." Then, Nathan softly lowered his lips to Ariana's ear to whisper gently. "I love you."
Ariana's smile widened as Nathan kissed her cheek again. Ariana hugged him.

Nathan was preparing dinner in the kitchen. He looked over at Ariana, who was watching him from the couch, a glass of wine in her hand.
"My dad did all the cooking, too."
"And your mom?" Nathan asked.
"She sat right here and watched. She couldn't cook either." Ariana smiled. Nathan also smiled and continued chopping up an onion.
"Fire's dying." Ariana informed him.
"Oh, yeah. I'll go get more wood." Nathan stopped chopping and walked towards Ariana.
"I got it." Ariana stood up.
"No, no. It's cold outside." Nathan reminded.
"So, I'll get a jacket." Ariana turned around and walked off into her parent's old bedroom.
She stopped and looked over at the vanity, picking up a bottle of perfume and smelling it. Nathan entered the room. Ariana placed the perfume bottle back on the vanity.
"My mom's perfume." She turned around and walked over to the closet. "Jenna was supposed to pack all this up, but... she kept putting it off." She turned the light on in the closet and looks inside. "I don't blame her." Ariana looked at the closet door and took one of the sweaters off its hook. She turned back to Nathan. "Here." She tossed the sweater at Nathan, who caught it. "Bundle up." Nathan started to put the jacket on. "It was my great-granddad's." Nathan popped up the collar and Ariana admired him in it. "And you look very hot in it."
"I look hot in your dead great-granddad's jacket?" Nathan questioned, amused.
"Beyond hot." Ariana grinned. Nathan walked over to her and kissed her. Ariana kissed him back. Nathan and Ariana walked back into the closet and continued to kiss. Nathan pushed Ariana into the back wall of the closet. Ariana pulled away for a moment, giggling. "Nathan! It's my parents' bedroom."
Nathan just smiled persistently, then kissed Ariana again, who smiled and finally gave in, wrapping her arms around his neck. Nathan continued holding her face with one hand and sliding the other up her arm.
Nathan heard a hollow thud when Ariana's back tapped the wall. Nathan broke their makeout session and looked up at the wall.
"What?" Ariana wondered, confused. Nathan rapped his knuckles on the wall. Ariana turned her head and watched him. "What?"
"This is hollow inside." Nathan told his girlfriend. Ariana moves out of the way. Nathan broke off one of the panels and removed the rest with ease. A hidden door lay behind the wall.
"What is it?" Ariana asked.
"A really good hiding place." Nathan broke the lock off the door and opened it. He flipped the light on and they saw an arsenal of weaponry for hunting vampires within the hidden closet.
"Oh, my god..."

Ariana removed a journal from a bookcase in the hidden room. Nathan, leaning against the doorframe, watched her.
"These must be the other Johnathan Gilbert journals. Jeremy had the one, but John said that there were others." Ariana flipped through the pages. "His whole life's in here." She looked around the hidden room in awe.
"I'll go get the firewood. Let you have a moment." Nathan said. Ariana crouched down on the floor and grabbed a handful of wooden bullets. Nathan left the room as Ariana continued to examine the weaponry in the hidden room.

Nathan had went to get the firewood but he'd been gone too long in Ariana's opinion. She walked out into the living room, rubbing her arms due to the cold. She looked out the open front door for Nathan.
"Are you growing the trees out there?" Nathan didn't respond. Ariana glanced around her, nervously, and began to inch closer to the front door. "Nathan?" Ariana continued to look out the front door. Quietly, she picked up a knife from the countertop and slowly walked to the front door and out on the porch. "Stefan, what are you doing out there?"
Suddenly, a werewolf came up from behind Ariana. Ariana gasped in shock, turned around, and stabbed him in the stomach with the knife. The werewolf fell to his knees as Ariana rushed back into the house, shutting and locking the front door behind her. The werewolf painfully removed the knife from his stomach. Ariana rushed up the staircase.

Elena's kidnapper(s) opened the trunk of a car and Elena recognized where they were at: her family's lakehouse. She had learned the name of one of the kidnappers, if there were more than one. His name was Brady.
He got Elena out of the trunk and led her to the front door of the lakehouse. He had his hand over Elena's mouth as they hid beside the door so whoever came out didn't see them.
"Are you growing the trees out there?" Ariana joked. No one made a sound. Elena silently prayed that her sister did not walk out that door. "Nathan? Nathan, what are you doing out there?"
Brady stepped into the doorway, then Elena heard him groan. She glanced over to him and saw that Ariana had stabbed him. Elena chuckled lightly so he didn't hear her.
All of a sudden, there was a scream from the garage. Brady was too distracted trying to capture Ariana, so Elena crept over to the garage.
The first thing her attention was directed to when Elena walked in, was the fact that Tyler had a stake gun pointed directly at Nathan.
"Elena, I'm so sorry." Tyler apologized immediately. Elena helped Nathan get the bullets out of his body, then after gaining his strength, Nathan thanked Elena before rushing out to help Ariana.
Elena hugged Tyler and they walked out of the garage. Brady was laying dead on the ground and Nathan had Ariana in his arms, reassuring her that she was okay.
"Ari, I didn't know what they were gonna do to you. I didn't. I would never ever let anybody hurt you, I swear... I just... I don't wanna be like this anymore." Tyler sobbed.
Even though Ariana swore to never speak to Tyler again, her heart broke for him at that moment. So, she stepped forward and pulled him into a hug.
They all went inside as they waited for Stefan to take Elena and Tyler home. The Gilbert twins read some of Jonathan's journals as they waited, before Stefan arrived.
Being a concerned boyfriend and a concerned boy best friend, Stefan immediately asked Ariana and Elena if they were alright, hugging both of them. Then, after Ariana exchanged hugs with Stefan, Elena, and Tyler again, Stefan took the human and the werewolf home.

Nathan had just ended his call with Damon when Ariana entered the room. Nathan turned around and looked at her.
"That was, um... that was Damon. We need to talk."
"What is it?" Ariana wondered.
"He learned that Elijah's planning for you to die in the sacrifice ritual." Nathan told her. Ariana looked down and breathed out. "Both you and Elena..." Ariana's head shot back up again.
"What? No!"
"Ana--"
"No! Me, I can handle. I've lived a good life and I'm willing to die in that ritual if it means protecting those I love. But Elena? I love her more than every single person on this earth, Nathan, including you and all of my friends. She has been and always will be my number one and I'll choose her everytime. So, I am going to find a way to make sure that Elena stays out of this! She's coming out of this alive!"
"And what about you, huh?" Nathan scoffed. "Will you come out of this alive?"
"Maybe not. But that's a risk I'm willing to take..." Ariana muttered. Nathan moved closer to her.
"Ana, just--"
"No! Elena deserves to live more than I do. She's the one that's stuck by my side since the day we were born. We've fought all of our battles together and we will keep fighting them together! But sooner or later, one of us is going to end of losing this battle, and I won't let it be her! Yes, I understand that fate wants both of us to die in that stupid ritual, but I refuse to let anyone lay a hand on my sister, okay? I've managed to protect her from harm all of these years! I've saved her so many times from experiencing the pain that this cruel world can do to you! I've managed to be the big sister to her that I am, and I won't ever stop protecting her until the day my heart stops!"
By now, tears were streaming down Ariana's face.
"She lives. I'll make sure of it..." She span around, wiping her watery eyes and wet cheeks, and walked away.

It's been, what? Two weeks since I've posted? I don't know. Well, it's currently 7:04am and I've had no sleep at all. Plus, my last year of high school (year 11) begins on the 7th of September, and it's currently the 28th of August, so I'm starting to get all panicky. AND THE EVEN SCARIER THING: THE ORIGINALS IS GETTING TAKEN OFF OF NETFLIX ON THE 31ST OF AUGUST! THAT'S ONLY IN THREE DAYS! Luckily, though, I got the Originals DVDs two months for my birthday. Lucky me!
So... when you guys read books on wattpad, do you act the scenes out? I do, with books that I read AND write. I was reading through the last scene in this chapter and was literally crying while acting it out... 😂 I love Ariana, she's so protective and would do anything to keep her twin safe. I think it's pitiful that Ariana thinks she has to be the bigger sister just because she was born first, so she thinks it's her responsibility to protect her siblings.
I am still trying not to make Ariana sound as self-centred as Elena did in the show (I still love you, Elena!!❤️❤️), so how'd I do? Do you like Ariana? Does she need improvements?
