We meandered, crunching over
red and brown leaves
at a secluded, well-manicured
park after a first dinner date.
A few weeks after texts,
we chatted by the fireplace.
The warmth between us
led us to shake off our jeans.
Trick-or-treaters emptied
our sweet, wrapped cavities.
Classic R&B tunes on the radio
put us in the mood.
Sasha leaned in,
cupped my cheeks,
and awkwardly planted a kiss
that hit my nose.
I laughed.
Sasha laughed louder.
I held my fingers above my
head like antlers and made
a silly face.
Sasha loosened up,
and threw her arms
around my neck.
We kissed,
her hands trailing my body,
and I wrapped her hair around
her neck.
We licked pumpkin spice cream
off each other.
Snow mingled with swaths of crisp leaves.
Sasha handed me a neatly wrapped gift
and bit her fingernail.
I lifted my gaze to her.
I'd asked her not to gift me anything.
Sasha motioned with her eyes to open it.
I tore the paper off.
It was a positive pregnancy test.
I glanced at Sasha
and back to the test.
Sasha had tears.
I choked back a lump
forming in my throat.
Parents for Christmas,
it could have happened
at a better time.
Sasha spilled into my arms
and we celebrated.
