"Huh?" Ueno's eyes shot open as Freya gave her a side hug

"Huh?" Ueno's eyes shot open as Freya gave her a side hug. Warmth filled Ueno, and her father's smiled came to her mind. For a second, she let herself float in the comfort before she pushed Freya away. "What do you thi—"

The second slap landed on her cheek, and Freya pulled her into another hug, adding a touch of a mama bear.

This time Ueno didn't struggle to get free. The slaps hurt her, but there was something strange about them. They didn't burn like the one she had gotten from her mother. She let her head sunk lower.

"Do you always slap and hug people?" she asked after a minute of silence with the wind whispering among the leaves.

Freya let her go, giving her a big shrug and an awkward, toothy smile. 'I guess.'

"You're weird."

They continued sitting there, not communicating. The wind played with their hair, but it refused to hint what to say next.

"Stop staring," Ueno growled.

The other girl didn't look away, only lifted her eyebrow.

"Keep your pity for somebody else! I don't need it! I'm fine on my own!" Ueno broke the eye-contact, her lip crushed by her teeth.

Freya tapped her knee.

"What?" She snapped her head.

Freya pointed at her, opened her palm, and wrote with the other.

"You want me to write?"

Freya shook her head. She again pointed at Ueno but added a hand movement of obtaining something and then writing.

"You want something to write on?" Ueno asked a minute later.

Freya gave her double thumbs-up, and then she cupped her hands.

The senpai snorted, getting out her mobile and finding a notepad app. The different mobile phone kept sliding in Freya's fingers, and she tapped letters she didn't want to use.

In the end, Ueno needed to rewrite and translate the message. "What I mean by pity?"

Freya nodded and scratched behind her head. This was her first time using the modern mobile phone.

"You don't remember?"

A blush crept across her face as she shook her head.

Ueno puckered her lips a bit, frowning as she pondered about if she should tell her. However, reminding herself she was Aoi Ueno, and that she could do whatever she wanted, she remembered the first few days after Freya had transferred.

"I came to see you since you were new and all. It was my duty, and it helped the reputation that the headmistress' daughter showed the new students around."
