Better to have an enemy who slaps you in the face than a friend who stabs you in the back. - Unknown

The school day, finally over, I told Jon I'd meet him out front, before waiting for all the other students to exit.

Mr. Haggerty finished collecting his papers before he realized I was there.

"Oh, Harley! I didn't know you were still here. You startled me." He chuckled. "I figured you'd be making your way down to the auditorium for the final auditions."

I shifted the weight between my feet, fidgeting with my hair. "About that..."

"What is it?"

"I was actually wondering if I could miss today. Jon and I have some really important research to do for our project."

"Ah, I see. Jon wants you to help him."

"Well, we are doing a project together. Plus I already bailed on him once to help with preparing for the auditions."

"Bailed? Harley, are you sure you can handle this? I could always ask someone else if you're too busy. Kirsty has been asking about assisting me. Maybe I should..."

"No!" I exclaimed. "I promise it's a one time thing. No more missing."

"If you're sure." I nodded. "Okay then. You may have the day off. But first..."

Next, I don't know how or why it happened but he began singing.

Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness wakes and stirs imagination
Silently, the senses abandon their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write
For I compose the music of the night

Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Hearing is believing, music is deceiving
Hard as lightening, soft as candlelight
Dare you trust the music of the night?

Close your eyes for your eyes will only tell the truth
And the truth isn't what you want to see
In the dark it is easy to pretend
That the truth is what it ought to be

I felt my eyes close as I listened to him sing.

Close your eyes
Start a journey to a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes and let music set you free
Only then can you belong to me

Opening my eyes when I felt a hand on my cheek, I realized it was him. He was gazing intently into my eyes as though he was singing to me. For whatever reason, I couldn't break eye contact.

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night

He circled around me, my eyes following his every move.

You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

When he finished, he was right in front of me again, our faces so close I could hear and feel him breathing.

Our eyes were fixated on one another, neither of us able to break eye contact.
