her hair

was the crown she wore atop her head,

and should have commanded respect.

It coiled and spiralled and twisted and turned 

And harsh comments it would deflect.

But jealous people and their praying hands

tried to make her hair a cage, 

they touched her to claim authority

And placed her vulnerable on a stage

Their gnarly fingers poked and prodded

her hair as if with ease,

made her crown make her a clown

and put her in trapeze.

But her hair could not be domesticated

Nor her willpower controlled,

She knew her own self worth:

Nothing short of gold.
