Chapter Twenty Nine-birthday surprise

Start from the beginning

Considering that I haven't taken a bath, that was a bad idea but who am I to complain. It is after all my birthday.

"Thanks. So what's for breakfast?" I peek at the bright heated oven, inspecting whatever is inside.

"None of your business, but since you asked. I'm baking jam taunt for you," she confirms, placing the dow on the pan.

I jump delightfully and hug her with Mpendulo still in my arms and furiously pulling my dreadlocks, definitely from irritation.

Jam taunt is my most favourite, followed by red valvet. Only her can bake it the way I like it.

Mpendulo wiggles in my hands gesturing that he wants to get down and away from my hold.

"Knock knock," Khanyi barges inside the kicthen holding sunflowers in her hands.

"Khanyi, my darling," Gogo warmly utters and they share a passionate appreciative hug.

"Hi gogo. You, these are yours," she smiles and gives me the sunflowers.

I excitedly read the small note written, These remind me of you. Happy Birthday Love.

I stare at Khanyi and grin. "Thank you."

She confusedly stares at, her eyes daring I clarify my words which I find very weird.

"For the sunflowers," I state.

"Those ain't from me. I got them from the delivery guy outside," she utters.

"Really?"
This is questionable, if not from her then from who exactly?

"Yeah. Either way, I'm spoiling you today, for the whole day. Go get ready," she dismisses me.

I nod. Slightly feeling overwhelmed.

"These are lovly. Give them to me, I'll place them in a jar," gogo snatches the sunflowers from her grip.

Mpendulo comes running to his aunt, making his presence known by mumbling words I can't even make out, as always.

"Gogo, will you be okay, alone?"

"Baby girl, just because I'm 70 doesn't mean I can't take good care of myself. I'm no longer that sick, so I'll be okay," she pinches both my cheeks and I nod in agreement.

We never ever leave her by herself. She's old and needs to be taken good care of.

"Go have fun, I'll take good care of this big boy of yours," she reassures me.

"Thank you gogo. I love you so much cutie."
She rolls her eyes at me and I laugh amusingly.

"Go," she demands while taking out the jam taunt from the oven.

I see Khanyi drooling in amusement as she glances at the jam taunt.
I don't blame her though, they really look and smell delicious.

The entire time I spend pampering myself for my day ahead, I irritatingly can't help but wonder who sent those sunflowers?

Gradually I'm beginning to develop a drastic headache, trying to connect the dots to whom might have bought these flowers, but I'm actually getting nowhere with this overthinking I'm torturing myself with.

The only people close to me know I love sunflowers, including Nathi.
But who could it be? One of my girls maybe or Nathi?
Though it can't be Nathi, Khanyi would have told. But I can't shake off the feeling that it's Nathi.

Who else would even write that simple note that has so much meaning to it?

"So we are we going?" I curiously question, while appreciating the tingling sweet taste of the jam taunt.
