Chapter 10: Working with "the crush"

On the next day, at 2 p.m., Jane got herself ready to meet with Erik and Darcy at 2:30 on the Airbnb where he was staying. They were going to start research together on that day, and she was very excited. Jane had lunched an hour before, changed her clothes, combed her hair, and fixed her make up. After leaving her bedroom ready to go, she grabbed her big grey purse, which was on the bench she had on the hallway and went down the stairs. Meanwhile, Loki was sat on the couch reading one of the books Jane kept under her coffee table. What he decided to wear that day was a little more casual than the scientist's clothes. He looked at her as she passed behind him in a rush. Slightly offended, he turned to the mortal and said:

- Are you at least going to tell me where you are heading? – She stopped in front of the door, rolled her eyes, and answered:

- My research job with Erik and Darcy begins today. I will meet them at an Airbnb. See you later! – Without making any further conversation, Jane opened the front door, left the house, and closed it. For the first time in nine days, she would drive her car, which was parked on the street across her residence. It was a Lexus black sedan that she bought on the year she moved to Washington.

After getting into the car, Jane sat on the driver's seat, put her purse on the right backseat, and took a deep breath. She smiled at herself, excited with her new scientific adventure, fastened her seat belt, put the Airbnb address on her cellphone's GPS, and started driving. Jane would hardly admit it but was a little upset about having to stay an entire afternoon away from the god of mischief. "Jane, do a favor to yourself and stop thinking about your ex's brother!" she thought, mad at herself.

- Everything is going to be okay, Jane. This research is going to be developed, no matter how much the universities despise you. – she whispered at herself, breathing deeply while she got closer to her destination. The warrior usually enjoyed driving; however, she was so nervous that day that not even doing an exciting activity would cheer her up. All that she wanted was to not disappoint Erik and see her scientific ideas be admired instead of underestimated.

- Remember Loki's words: you are the most passionate, talented, intelligent, and driven person of this universe. That was such a cute thing to say... - Jane said to herself, sighing in happiness while she remembered that compliment. While the mortal was with her head in the clouds, a discrete green glow came from her passenger's seat, Loki appeared and said, smiling mischievously:

- Did you say my name? – Jane screamed loudly, very scared, and shocked. The woman almost hit her car at that moment, her eyes were widened, and she gawked. Trying to control herself not to say some nasty words, she stopped her car on the red light, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. Furious at the situation, she turned to him and said:

- Are you crazy?! You almost made my car crash! – He bit his lower lip and felt terrible for having scared her like that, but he would never show it. Instead, the Asgardian laughed and answered:

- You have been living with me for nine days, and you still ask me that? Craziness is my state of mind. – Jane shook her head in denial, angry. A small part of the mortal was glad that Thor's brother entered her car to not stay away from her.

- How did you get in here? – She asked, frowning while briefly looking him in the eye. The warrior avoided gazing at Loki at that moment because she had to pay attention to driving... and there was also the possibility of getting lost in his light blue eyes, as already happened before.
