Commander Jefferson looked thoughtfully at Simon. After some time, it looked like he had convinced him and grinned.

"I agree. We will pick you up in twelve hours-time Colonel. And welcome back."

"Thank you, Commander," said Tamara, grateful for his decision.

"Let's go, ladies," said Simon with a large smile.

While driving, Simon kept looking in his rear-view mirror and couldn't help grinning as he saw the sisters bonding and laughing together.

"Umm, I think we passed the street leading to my apartment Simon," said Tamara.

'Damn it,' he thought.

"About that..." he started.

"What happened?" she said narrowing her eyes. "And why are we stopping in front of Charles Malloy's apartment?"

"We'll explain everything inside," said Charlene sounding a bit distressed.

--- --- --- --- ---

The doorbell rang and Mrs. Collins opened the door.

"Hello ma'am, I'm here to pick up Lainey!"

"Gary! Sweetheart! Come in," she said, grinning. "Lainey, Gary is here!"

"Coming!"

He removed his sunglasses and waited. They decided to go for a picnic as they had discussed more than a year before. He had packed some sandwiches, wine, and toffee, Lainey's favorite sweets.

Roach looked up and saw Collins on the upstairs landing. She was wearing jeans shorts and a checkered red and white shirt. She came down the stairs and as she walked closer, he got lost on her lips. He inhaled and smirked.

"Hmm, cherry," he said, biting on his lower lip.

She walked in closer and whispered in his ear, "And if you behave, I'll let you have a taste."

Roach choked on the response.

"Shall we?" she winked.

They drove to Lake Washington which is a thirty-minute drive from Collins' residence. When they arrived, he noticed that there were families, couples, and friends enjoying the beautiful day and celebrating the end of the war. Roach did not mind, nonetheless, he preferred somewhere quiet where he could enjoy the day with Lainey. Collins was apparently having the same thoughts.

"I know somewhere quieter," she said.

So they grabbed their picnic bags and walked for twenty minutes through the red pine trees which had littered the ground with their needles and cones. There were crunching noises with each step they took. In spite of being a warm day, the Norway Spruce trees towered over them, providing partial shade and some coolness. They could hear wings fluttering and birds chirping with an occasional sound from insects. Finally, they arrived in a small clearing with the lake on their left.

"Wow, this place is breath-taking," said Roach in awe.

"I used to come here all the time when I was little."

The sun felt hot on their skin but they did not mind. Especially Roach, who barely sees the sun from where he comes from.

They lied down on the cloth and inhaled the freshness and pureness of nature. Roach got out the Chardonnay, well-chilled to be served with Brie and Smoke Gouda.

"Well well," said Collins, "I am really impressed."

"I did some research," he winked as he poured the white wine into the glasses. "I had to make sure that this will be a perfect day."
