"We never realize how frozen we are until someone starts to melt our ice"
— Bridgett Devoue

One More Mistake
Chapter thirty-nine

❱ When I entered Caine's room, he locked eyes with me and I've felt like I haven't seen him in months. I missed him and I needed him now more than ever. And I silently wondered how was I ever going to survive without him.

"You didn't come yesterday, you—" before he can finish, I had threw my hands around him. He was shocked but in spite of that I've felt the weight of his arms land on my back. Soon I've felt him pull me closer towards him and I couldn't help but hug him as tight as I could.

And I as hold him, I realized that he was my safe haven, he always has been.

"Are you okay?" His whispered as he gently rubbed my back.

I pulled myself away from him before looking back at his soft eyes.

"I'm sorry" I had to tell him everything, he needed to know.

"Sorry for what? If you're talking about not visiting me yesterday, it's okay. You just had me worried because you didn't text me or call me." He looked worried and I couldn't help but feel guilty. He's been nothing but sincere with me all along while I've been nothing but selfish with him.

I shake my head and look away from him.

"I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about all the things I've been hiding from you." I don't look at him when I tell him but I could already feel his eyes on me.

"Remember that Thursday morning when I visited you and I seemed distracted and distant? I didn't say anything and cried next to you all along. You asked me what had happened but I didn't speak a word. This lasted for a whole month, do you remember?" I knew he remembered this, he cried with me and told me everything was going to be okay even though I knew it wasn't.

"I remember" he said quietly. I glanced quickly at him and noticed the look on his face which made my heart drop. He looked at me with a broken look, he knew what was coming yet didn't say anything.

"Something happened, something really big actually. It was a Wednesday night, I was at home when I got a call from my— from Lilian. I didn't think any of it because she would usually call me to tell me that she felt lonely in the house, without... my sister around the house, but when I heard her cry I knew it wasn't about her, it was something else..." I stopped.

I couldn't go on because remembering the feeling when Lilian told me Sterling was dead, it was so painful.

"Thea..." I heard Caine's calming voice yet I didn't react. I soon realized that my breathing was becoming heavy and the room felt smaller. I tried to shrug it off but as seconds passed by, I felt worse.

"Thea!" I looked at Caine and noticed his wide eyes staring at me concernedly.

"I'm sorry, I have to go" I didn't say anything else before running out of the room. I heard him calling out to me but I didn't stop. As I turned the corner, I bumped into someone.

Two hands were now securing me in place and when I looked up to see who was in front of me, I noticed a familiar silver locket.

"Kace" he was looking at me concernedly and I couldn't help but sigh in relief.

"I told you to wait outside for me" I said back, trying to ignore the urge to cry.

He stared at me curiously but didn't mention anything about it.

"There is a big storm and I was worried about you, you were taking a long time" he said and I noticed that he was still holding me.

"I was just about to go down there, we should go now before Bruce finds out I've been with you instead of Alec" I don't wait for him to ask anything because I lean away form his touch before walking away. I hear him follow behind me but don't wait for him.

When I making my way outside, I noticed that there was actually a storm.

"Here you can borrow my jacket" I turned and noticed Kace was taking off his jacket and handing it to me. I reached out and grabbed it. I quickly put it on before walking outside but before I made it far away from Kace, he grabbed my arm.

"Wait for me" he said as he leaned in to me. We were so close to each other, I've felt his hot heat. Though, I didn't mind because my head was still in that room with Caine.

We soon started to walk towards the car and I got in. He quickly made his way around the car before getting in as well.

When he shut the door, the sound of the storm and rain had suddenly became distant and now the car was surrounded with lovely silence.

We were both not moving at all.

"I hate Seattle" He said after a while of silence. I look over at him and forced a small smile.

"Me too" he looked back at me and stared curiously at me though quickly turned away before driving away.

When we got near my house, Kace had stopped a couple blocks away from the gates. I was about to open the door but I felt his hand land on my shoulder. He looked worried and hesitant before speaking.

"Be careful with your uncle, okay?" I was surprised by his sudden worry about me but nevertheless I nodded and got off the car. But wondered were he was going to stay for tonight.

He told me earlier to not worry about it but I couldn't help it.

I waved at him but do to the heavy rain, I doubt he seen me. His car quickly disappeared in the street and I had quickly made my way towards the gate. When I was just about to enter, I've felt a hand clamped my arm and pull me towards them.

I had thought it was Bruce but when I met his blue eyes, I knew it wasn't him.
