I've been watching from a distance for a while now

I've been watching from a distance for a while now. The love of my life didn't know I'd check in on them. Watching my baby girl grow up, and not being there killed me; it was to protect them. I'd picture what my life would've been like if I didn't have to leave. Probably would've had two more kids and a dog that roamed our yard. Now here I am outside of Nicole's house, debating on knocking on her door. She probably still hates me, and I don't blame her. My hands ran down my face, I'm conflicted. I heard from a messenger that my daughter is in trouble. Nine out of 10 that means everyone she loves is in danger. I'm here to protect and get answers.
Finally, I worked up the courage to go knock on her door. Feet feel like sandbags with each step I took. Now, I'm in front, I slowly knocked on the door. Placing my hands deep in my pockets, while I waited for her to answer.

"Who is it?," she asked through the door.

I replied, "it's me Chadwick."

Hearing her slide the top lock, and unlocking the bottom lock. She opened the door, her eyes got big. Quickly she shut the door.

"I'm dreaming," she said more to herself than to me.

"No your not. Daddy's home," I replied.

She opened the door with glossy eyes. Still beautiful and elegant as ever. I truly missed her, and so many emotions ran through me.

"Why are you here, after all these years?," she asked me.

"I've been watching from a distance for a while now. I know our child is in danger," I replied.

"Ours? I practically raised that girl myself," she clapped back.

"Well you damn sure didn't lay down by yourself Nicole," I replied smartly.

"Well Chad, I might as well had. You left," she yelled and tear fell down her cheek.

"Baby, I didn't have a choice. The agreement was to leave you two, so that you and baby girl are safe. You should be thanking me."

She rolled her eyes and turned on her heels. I caught her before she could leave. She swung and hit me repeatedly, then began to cry.

"You should've been here Chad," she said barely above a whisper.

"I know... I know. As much as you were hurting, I was too. I'd plan to grow old with you and have two more kids. But our world ended before it could start," I admitted.
