The next time Dan raised his camera, Zoe met the lens with an unfaltering gaze. She grinned like she knew something the rest of the world didn't, but something she just might share if they asked nicely enough.

Her hair was whipping about in the wind, and every other picture Dan captured was a candid of her laughing and grabbing for it, twisting it back just long enough for him to snap another neater, more poised one.

"This is a bit of a disaster," she said after a while of this.

Dan paused to scroll through the shots he'd gotten so far, smiling down at the carefree ones where Zoe had been caught off guard by the world.

"Maybe," he said. "But it's real."
