Chapter 41: The Chase

Start from the beginning

There she was. She was sleeping with Omar, his arms wrapped around her. I felt jealous. I wanted to pull a pistol from my pocket and shoot him through the glass. But it would probably wake up the other guy. I gently knocked on the window.

Nicole moved and I noticed Omar tighten his grip on her. She opened her eyes and she saw me! I gave her a big smile. She looked shocked to see me and started trying to get out of Omar's grasp. He moved his lips and Nicole rolled her eyes. Then, she shrugged. He was too strong for her. Now I was angry.

I started slowly opening the window, there was a ridge I hadn't noticed before. Nicole looked hopeful. I finally opened the window all the way while holding myself up on the ledge. I fell into the room, noisily. Omar stirred, but stayed asleep. I closed the window and made my way to the bed, thinking of how to free Nicole.

Omar started moving, a lot. I quickly flattened out on the floor on my belly. Just in time.

“Ah… Hey Nicole,” Omar yawned. I could feel the anger burn up in my chest.

“ I think I’m leaving you with Lance again.”

"Mmm… Okay.” Nicole mumbled.

“You wanna shower?” Omar asked.

I didn’t hear an answer from Nicole. I heard the bed move and the rattle of a chain.

"I'll be right back," Omar said.

The door opened and closed.

I got up and smiled at Nicole. She looked at me with sad eyes.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

Nicole looked up and I noticed her arm was chained to the bed with a handcuff.

"Alright. Hold still," I pulled my gun out, "This won't hurt a bit."

I grabbed her arm and pulled it, stretching the chain. Then, I shot. The chain broke, but that probably called some attention.

"Quick! Get up!" I grabbed Nicole and pulled her to the window.

"No," She yelled, "It's too far down!"

"Nicole! You've done it before!"

"Yeah! And I sprained my ankle!"

"Too bad!" I yelled and wrapped my arm around her waist. Then I opened the window and jumped, pulling Nicole with me.

I landed on my back, with Nicole on top of me.

I groaned in pain, "Get up. We- we got to... To get to the... car."

Nicole got off me and helped me get up. So, we started running. Nicole was fast enough to catch up to me. Soon enough, we got to my car. I made Nicole sit in the front seat and put her seatbelt on.

I drove very fast. Apparently, it wasn't enough. Another car was right behind us.

"Who is it?!" I yelled.

"It's Omar!!"

"What?!" I hit the gas and went faster.

I drove in no particular direction, but tried to make lots of turns. Omar was getting closer and closer.

BOOM! Omar hit the back of the car, but it was still moving.

"Nicole. Can you shoot a gun?" I asked.

"What?!"

"Can you shoot a gun?"

"No!"

"Well you have to! Just aim and pull the trigger." I yelled.

"You do it!"

"I'm driving!"

"Then let me drive!"

"There isn't any time," I shoved the pistol into her hands, "If he's alone he won't be able to shoot back without crashing. Shoot him!"

Nicole aimed the gun at the window and shot. Omar was still driving.

She made another shot, breaking more windows. Still no hit.

"Come on Nicole! Aim!"

Nicole shot again. Nothing.

I was getting frustrated. Nicole kept trying with no luck.

"Stop shooting." I made a sharp U-turn. Omar caught on and followed, no hesitation.

Nicole started screaming when Omar hit her side of the car at full speed.

It all happened so fast. The car flipped three times, off the street and into the forest. Omar's followed, but instead of flipping sideways, his car flipped forward.

We stopped moving.

"Get out!" I yelled.

My vision was blurry, but I quickly snapped off Nicole's seatbelt, followed by my own. I started crawling out through the window of the car, since the car was upside down and dented into a tree. Nicole was on the side without the tree, which made it easier for her.

I climbed over the car, since the tree was in the way. Sure enough, the back of the car was in flames.

Nicole was already out, covered in dirt and blood.  Omar's car wasn't far from ours, wrecked into another tree and also on fire. The driver's seat was empty. That means he already got out of his car.

I looked around, trying to find him, with no luck.

"Come on." I said to Nicole. I grabbed her hand and started leading her out of the forest.

All of a sudden, something hit the back of my head and I fell forward. I heard Nicole scream. I got on my back and was looking at Omar, grabbing Nicole. I reached into my pocket for my pistol. It wasn't there. My vision was blurry and I moved slowly.

"Let. Her. Go." I groaned.

Omar started laughing. His hair was messy. He was also covered in dirt and blood. He must have hit his head hard.

Omar pulled a pistol out of his pocket and aimed at me.

"Any last words?" He laughed.

Nicole kicked the gun out of his hand. It landed close behind me. I got on my stomach again and started reaching for it. I heard a thud and a cry of pain, telling me that Omar made Nicole fall or something.

"I'll punish you for that later Nicole." Omar said.

I almost had the gun, but when I least expected it, Omar stabbed a knife into my right hand.

I yelled in pain. The blade went through my entire hand, the end of it sticking out of my palm.

Omar laughed and pulled the knife out of my hand, showing me a big hole in my hand.

Omar flipped me around and got on top of me. His left knee was on my stomach, his right arm on my chest, and his right hand holding the knife to my neck.

"This is going to end." Omar pressed the knife into my neck slowly. I reached for my knife in my belt with my left hand.

Almost. Almost. I got it! I pulled the knife up and stabbed Omar in the leg.

He groaned in pain and I pushed him off me.

I started hearing sirens and police cars. Somebody must have seen the fire. My hand and neck burned, but I ignored the pain and went to Nicole.

"Come on!" I pulled her up with my bloody hand and led her to the police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks.

"DO NOT MOVE!" A cop shouted into a megaphone. Two police officers came up to us and checked us for weapons. We didn't have any on us, they were in the car, which was now destroyed.

They led us to the ambulances while I explained that Omar was in the forest. They said they would get him and that I could explain the story later.

Nicole was passed out in the ambulance seconds later. We were driven to the hospital.
