Kai stood in the gym in a crouch as John paced around her on the mats. In their limited spare time they had been sparing almost every day for a month since they had been stranded on the planet together. They were fairly evenly matched most days; Kai was faster, but John was stronger.

John charged her first, as usual losing his patience before she did. He swung at her and she ducked easily under his arm, twisting around with her back flat against his chest. She grabbed his off arm aiming to twist it behind him. He followed her motion however instead of letting her gain leverage he pulled back at the last second and kicked at her legs. Kai was half a second too late and had to throw herself across the mats to avoid to Colonel's grip. She rolled and came up in a crouch, a pleased smile on her face.

Kai enjoyed sparing with Teyla, but Teyla was entirely focused and almost cold, it reminded Kai too much of training back in the Academy. John however was fun. All of his good humor and passion showed up on the mat. He was focused but never seemed to take anything too seriously and never lost his temper. It was an interesting change from the people she used to spar with back at home.

Kai studied him, waiting for him to make his next move. She watched his hands and shoulders, waiting for some indication he was about to launch into motion. Instead of immediately attacking again he was watching her as well, waiting. His black t-shirt clung to his muscular chest and his hazel eyes were sparkling with excitement. It was distracting.

John would never admit it, but since Kai had confided in him about her past, he had always been a little careful when he sparred with her. He never wanted to do anything to ever give her a reason to be afraid of him, but that didn't mean he went easy on her. He knew if she ever suspected he wasn't giving one hundred percent every time they stepped on the mats she wouldn't come back. She never gave an inch.

Kai was staring at him, but seemed distracted and John took advantage. He slid across the mats faster than she anticipated. Instead of striking her, however, he wrapped an arm around her waist and moved as though he were going to slam her back down against the mat. He twisted at the last minute, shielding her from the full force of the impact. He pinned her with his forearm sideways across her collarbones rather than her throat.

He and Kai were both fighting to catch their breath, both of their chests moved up and down together. John froze as he stared down at her in surprise He could keep up with her most days, but it was rare for him to pin her. He flashed her a triumphant smile. "Gotcha," he grinned.

Kai was panting as she inwardly cursed herself. She had let herself become distracted and The Colonel had taken full advantage. Her instructors would have been incredibly disappointed in her. She stared up into his eyes from only inches away and he continued to smirk down at her. She scowled at him and coiled her muscles as she prepared to throw him off of her.

His comm activated. "Colonel Sheppard come in," Elizabeth's voice was loud enough for Kai to hear as well.

John's focus shifted for one moment and Kai moved, flipping him off of her. John hit the mat hard and lay beside her. "Ouch," he grumbled and he reached up to activate his comm. "This is Sheppard," he said through a grimace. He turned to face Kai who was crouching beside him. She smirked back at him.
