I feel sick to my stomach. Paul's arms are still tightly embracing me; normally I feel as if this is the safest place in the world, but now I just want to get out of here. I feel my muscles tense up even though I desperately try to hug him back as tight as I can. Too tight it seems, as Paul makes a slight choking sound, then laughs,

'A bit tight, love'

I let go of him and pull away (finally). His eyes are still teary but have a genuine happy look to them. He really thinks all of this is gonna work out and we will truly be a happy family. I wish we could be; but I can't keep this a secret forever.

'Sorry, Paul'

I laugh, but you could tell easily that it's forced and fake. Paul raises an eyebrow and goes to say something but before he can speak, John coughs loudly, interrupting deliberately,

'Now would you please explain what's going on?'

I guess Paul and John have sorted out what happened at the party because neither of them are being awkward with each other. This makes my life a whole lot easier, so I'm glad about that. Paul clears his throat, blushing,

'Well, it's not really my news to share'

Paul smacks my bum, gesturing I should speak.  Normally I'd laugh, and I'd be more than happy to share the news, even though it's very early days into the pregnancy. My mouth goes dry, and I try to speak but I stutter.

'I- I'm... uh'

John's causally leaning against the doorframe. Topless as he usually is when he's at home, with pyjama bottoms on (as he usually is at home, once again) and he's got a cigarette hanging out the side of his mouth.

'Yer what, Nance? Spit it out'

He takes a drag of his cigarette and raises his eyebrows, waiting for me to continue. I sigh and manage to spit out the words,

'I'm um... well I'm pregnant'

I cringe as I say the last word. John widens his eyes, then smiles,

'Pregnant, eh?'

I nod. John looks at Paul,

'Well done, Paul! You've only got her up the duff!'

I cringe slightly, knowing that this isn't exactly true, but what really makes me cringe is seeing Paul laugh and thank John. I feel myself start to sweat. John continues asking more questions,

Do you want a boy or a girl?

I really don't mind. Paul would rather a girl.

What names do you like?

I like Violet for a girl and Teddy for a boy. Paul agrees he likes those names. John asks if Teddy is short for Theodore; I say yes.

What about university?

I haven't figured that out yet. Paul says he'll support us.

This is too much, I have to leave. I feel sick and faint,

'I'm gonna go, Paul. See you, John'

Paul pouts and John looks confused. Paul kisses my cheek and I flinch when he does,

'I'll see you soon, yeah, love?'

I nod, and force a smile,

'Of course'

I notice John leave the room and go to his room presumably to get ready; leaving Paul and I alone. Paul holds my hands in his,

'I know I reacted badly earlier, Nance, and I'm really sorry. I'm just shocked, that's all. I promise I want to raise this child with you and we can be a happy little family. I just can't believe I'm going to be a dad'
