Y/N hurried down the street that her friend lived on. She walked up to the small, new-age shop and knocked on the door. After a moment of waiting, the door to the closed shop was unlocked and her friend Starla stood grinning in the doorway.

She had dirty blonde hair styled in two long braids and the flower crown that seemed to be ever-present resting on top of her head. Her eyes were a deep green, and they always held a look of vague bemusement in them.

Without a word of greeting, Starla grabbed hold of Y/N's hand and dragged her into the closed shop, locking the door behind them. The shop was filled with stands holding crystals, shelves holding books on tarot, and hanging from the ceiling were dried herbs. The whole place had a rather creepy aura, with the only light coming from the window in the front letting in moonlight, but before Y/N could freak herself out, Starla grabbed her hand again and led her friend up the stairs behind the counter that led to the apartment that her family lived in. Reaching the top of the narrow flight of stairs Starla pushed the door at the top, and the stairwell was suddenly bathed in warm light.

Upon entering the cozy clutter of Starla's apartment, the first thing Y/N  noticed was the somewhat disheveled-looking girl passed out on the couch in the living room. She had skin the color of fresh brownies, and black hair cut in a bob, with neon streaks of pink, purple, and blue.

"If Eve is her then your parents must have gone on another impromptu trip," Y/N said as the sleeping girl's snores filled the room.

"Yep," Starla said, spinning around the room. "You know how they are. Caught the wanderlust today and decided to go. They asked Eve to watch over me and the shop and after that, they left. Eve has been sleeping since she got her, and I don't know how good she will be at watching anything other than her eyelids, but that's ok. I can take care of myself."

Just as she said that the blonde tripped over her own feet and fell into the wall, causing several books to tumble from a high shelf and land roughly on her head. Y/N laughed. It may be true that their friend Eve, who was several years older than them spent 90% of her time sleeping, but she was a very grounded person the 10% of the time that she was awake, and Starla really needed that stability to counterbalance her whimsical nature.

"Sure you can," Y/N teased, helping her friend put the books back on the shelf. They had been friends for many years, and even though Y/N still hadn't gotten fully used to Starla's odd personality, she figured that she never would, but that didn't stop them from being good friends.

"So, what was it that you needed to tell me Y/N," Starla asked, grabbing the girl sleeping on the couch rather forcefully and pushing her off onto the floor so there would be room on the couch to sit.

Y/N flinched at Eve crashed to the floor. She was very surprised to see her friend remained fast asleep, now on the floor. Starla patted the sat next to her and waited expectantly for Y/N to sit down.

"Sooooo, what happened?" Starla asked, leaning forward with her chin held in her hands. Y/N opened her mouth to reply, but before she could Starla interrupted her, "wait! Don't tell me, let me guess!"

"Did you find a fair-haired man bought to you by the tide only for him to be taken away by a mysterious stranger in a hat?" She asked very quickly.

"Y-Yes, that's exactly what happened," Y/N replied, shocked by her friend's accuracy. "How did you know?"

"Yay! I knew it meant something special!" Starla cried, jumping to her feet and dancing around the room. "I saw it in my tea leaves this morning! It has finally happened!"

"Do you know what this means Y/N?!" Starla asked, clutching Y/N's hands in excitement. Y/N shook her head, completely baffled.

"It means that you are finally ready to go through the red door! Oh, I have been waiting for years for this day!" Starla answered, rushing from the room.

Y/N was too startled by the phrase that her friend had used to even notice that she had left the room. Go through the red door? Y/N thought. That stranger at the beach said the same thing, but what did it mean. Just what was going on?

The blonde returned and pressed a small, tangled ball of yarn into Y/N's hands. "Here you are, this will help you unlock the door." She was smiling from ear-to-ear and looking quite pleased with herself.

"WHAT IS THE NAME OF ALL THE CHAOTIC MISADVENTURES I'VE BEEN DRAGGED INTO IS GOING ON?" Y/N yelled, losing her patience with both her friend and the world at large.

Starla only continued to grin as she said. "I have given you my key."

".... I'm pretty sure it's a ball of yarn," Y/N responded, glancing at the mess of mauve string in her hands. She was seriously starting to question her friend's sanity.

"No silly," she answered, pinching Y/N's cheek. "Key is the title of the object, it doesn't describe the object itself. Oh, I did so want to tell you about all this sooner, but you were not yet ready."

"I'm confused," Y/N said, felling her head pound. "What does this key do exactly?"

"Truth be told I don't know a whole lot about them," Starla responded, still with that whimsical smile plastered on her face. "All I know is they act as both key and guide to any and all of the different gateways to the person who possesses them."

"But..." Y/N protested, starting to get agitated. "You still haven't answered what they unlock. What are these gateways? How do you know about them? And what does me finding a boy washed up on the beach have to do with any of this!"

"I have wanted to tell you about this for such a long time that my mind is all a jumble and I don't know where to start," Starla replied, rubbing the back of her neck uncomfortably. "Long story short, I think I know where the boy you found is, and I will take you there tomorrow, I would take you there now, but it is not the place to be wandering around at night."

Y/N felt nauseous. Nothing was making any sense, she had no idea what was going on, and the only person who seemed to know anything was Starla, and Y/N had always suspected that she was a bit crazy. With a sigh, Y/N followed Starla to her bedroom and curled up on the lower bunk bed that was hers whenever she stayed over. I hope that this is all just a weird dream, Y/N thought as she drifted off to sleep.

Her dreams were filled with keys, red doors, strange voices, the sound of waves crashing on the beach, and the face of that near-drowned boy, as even Y/N's subconscious was struggling to process everything that had happened in the last few hours.

A/N

Still not sure how I feel about this story if I am being honest. Things only get weirder from here, and I don't know if it is the good kind of weird.

I am sorry, I am normally not so insecure about my work. I think I was less nervous about posting Golden Family than I am this book. I guess that it's because this is a remake if a much older book.

Anyway, constructive criticism is always welcome, especially on this book because I want it to be the best that it can be. All that being said, thank you for reading! ^~^

Until next time I'll see you on the other side
