“What were you kids doing?! You know you could have fell off his back and then I had to write an accident report!” Principal, Mrs. Macie was practically pissed with us.
Ethan and I stood sitting in front of her desk as she spoke loudly at us. I even made sure I didn’t make contact with her eyes.
Mrs. Macie was know as the kind of principle that enforced her rules at her school. She wanted the school to be under order and recognized for good behavior (or anything she could brag about for that matter). With Ethan at this school, I’d say, goodbye to those dreams.
I just nodded at her remark.
“Principal Macie we were just having fun. We are teenagers after all” Ethan argued with a smug look.
I so wanted to yell at Ethan, to keep his trap shut. So much for courage on my side, as I just gaped at him.
Mrs. Macie looked at him hard. “And you Mister. This is not your first time here! That’s it! I’m sorry but, you’re going to have to take up an hour of detention after school, today!”
Cue my ‘Ooohhh’ here. Ethan was going to get detention. And all because of me! I felt totally guilty now.
“Mrs. Macie” I said in almost a whisper.
Both of there eyes became settled on me now. Making me even more nervous to speak.
“It wasn’t Ethan’s fault, I-”
“She just did what I told her to do. I told her to get on my back” Ethan finished my sentence.
What? Why wasn’t Ethan letting me explain myself? I felt guilty! This was my fault!
“An even more reason to keep you for detention, Mr. Jefferson” Mrs. Macie wrote on a post.
Then handed it to Ethan.
“Mrs. Darwin. I understand that it is your first week here, at this high school. I would hope you learn from this experience and don’t get into any other kind of trouble that will mark your school records. You’re excused” Mrs. Macie said to me.
