Jeongguk stood staring at the numerous shades of foundation trying to decide which one to get. He decided he couldn't miss another day of school since he hadn't been there long enough and was going to go tomorrow. The only issue was the dark bruise that circled around his neck.
He didn't want to go to school with bruises on him like he did back when his old foster parents would beat him up. He didn't want to see the looks of pity aimed at him and definitely didn't want to see how everything would turn out. People here didn't know he was a protagonist so did that mean his teachers would actually care about the bruise on his neck? Would people actually be willing to help him?
Would people actually care about his well being?
Jeongguk knew the answer to that question and it made him feel nauseous.
So he decided makeup was the best way to cover the bruise and avoid having anyone else actually worry about him. The cuts on his arm from the beer bottle were still wrapped up and he was going to make sure to go and change them again tonight. His uniform would cover the gauze anyways so he wasn't worried about hiding those.
But here he was staring at a couple of bottles of foundation that were basically identical. He did not have anything against guys wearing makeup and thought it looked quite nice, but he had never bought any for himself as he didn't want to draw attention. He couldn't help but grimace looking at the prices too, he already was low on cash with having to buy hair dye every week and now he had to get makeup!
"Excuse me sir," a girl said as she tapped Jeongguk on the shoulder. He glanced at his name tag seeing Hani to be written there. "Are you looking for anything?"
"I need a foundation that matches my skin tone but I don't really know which one to get."
"Oh! Here we can just use the testers and help you find your shade." She said as she grabbed onto Jeongguk's hand and grabbed a sampler. After a couple of swatches she seemed to feel content grabbing one specific bottle of foundation. "And I think this is your shade! Is there anything else you need?"
"Nope just this," Jeongguk said as he looked at the price of the bottle trying not to frown at how expensive it was. He already was imagining how much he'd have to work so his wallet wouldn't be even more empty than it was already. "I, uh, just needed something to even out my skin."
"You need to even out your skin? Your skin is already so great though! You'd look great with some mascara too but you can save that shopping for another day I guess. Follow me to the register and I can just get you this now." Hani said as she walked towards the register while Jeongguk followed her. "I'm assuming you have everything else you need when you apply makeup, right?"
"There's other stuff you need?"
"Oh my god, do you even have a beauty blender? Were you seriously planning to put on makeup with just your fingers?" The girl seemed to take a deep breath before crouching down behind the register and pulling out a package. "We're supposed to only give free beauty blenders out to people who have totaled over 85,660 won but it's on the house for you. Your total is 17,000 won."
Jeongguk simply bit his lip as he pulled out his wallet glancing at all the money he had in there. The turtleneck he was currently wearing was growing itchy and he knew that this was a necessary purchase. Sighing he slowly handed the money over to the girl.
"Thank you!" She said as she placed the receipt into the bag and handed it into Jeongguk. "I work here on weekdays so if you wish to get some more makeup and need help I'll be glad to help you out!"
Jeongguk simply smiled in response as he grabbed the bag and headed out of the store. He had to walk back home and couldn't help but feel glum the bag in his hand reminding him of how he barely had enough money to afford hair dye this week.
