"I'm on the payload! Get moving!" I spoke into my communicator, standing atop the payload as it moved towards our destination. I raised my small shield to defend myself but I knew it wouldn't be enough. "I need support here!" I'm supposed to be the eye in the sky not defending the payload alone. As I rounded a corner Reinhardt ran up beside me, he looked up at me and nodded, he had the payload secure. I took off into the sky and pulled out my bow. Using thermal air currents I was able to soar high above the battlefield spotting enemy turrets and taking them out with an arrow. Gliding with minimum effort allows me to multitask i.e. flying and shooting. My only issue is once I'm out of arrows I have to land and pick up the used ones. Thankfully I have someone on the ground aiding me. McCree, if he walks past someone or something I have shot he picks up the arrow and gives them to me when I am out. It's a huge help, so I'm not wasting time.
I look down and the payload has almost reached its destination.
I fly lower, watching as we are about to succeed our mission when I see an enemy agent aiming their gun at McCree. I acted on instinct, dropping into a dive, landing next to him and enveloping the man in my wings, the bullet hit me instead. It tore through my wing near my shoulder and lodged itself into my shoulder blade. It was excruciatingly painful but McCree was alive. The look on his face was one for utter shock, I fell forward only to have him catch me, I was close to passing out from the pain. He pulled me onto his back my large wings dragging along the floor as I cried out in pain. "Where- where are we going?" I questioned.
"I'm taking you back to see Mercy Darlin'. You need a doctor." He spoke, that was the last I remember before blacking out.
I woke up in a hospital bed, covered in wires and bandages. I looked around, noting I was in a large bed to allow room for my abnormal appendages and that a number of cards littered the bedside table all of which wishing me a speedy recovery.
As I sat up Angela walked in the door, she placed a hand on my lower spine and helped me up. "Careful. You only came out of surgery a few hours ago." She warned.
"How'd it go? How badly is it damaged?" I asked indicating my bandages and splinted wing.
"It's fine. No flying for a while though, I had to remove a number of feathers including some primary flight feathers to reach the wound." She smiled, looking underneath a bandage, "you should make a very speedy recovery. Also there is someone who would like to see you." She opened the door for McCree as she left.
"Hey Darlin'." He spoke, taking his hat off as he entered. "I Uh. I just really wanted to say thanks for what you did."
"Don't worry about it. You always help me, picking up my arrows for me." I shrugged, causing a shot of pain in my shoulder, McCree ran over and placed a gentle hand on my I damaged shoulder.
"I wouldn't try movin' too much there Darlin'. Angela says that with her advanced healing techniques you should be out in a couple of days." He smiled.
"Can't fly though." I looked down at my hands that rested in my lap. "She had to remove my primary flight feathers to access the wound, and if I can't fly what use am I? Just a freak."
"No. You're an amazin' archer, and honestly I think you're beautiful." I looked up as he spoke, blushing and scratching the back of his neck. "I know we got Hanzo but it does take the pressure off him and in my opinion... you're better than him." I couldn't help but blush.
"You flatter me. Really. I'm not that good. Aerial combat is my strength, I'm literally a bird who can't fly. I'm a grounded, 18 foot wingspan, walking target. At least in the air I have the manoeuvrability and distance advantage."
"Well. Looks like I'll just have to stick by your side to protect you. Like you did for me." I smiled. He was willing to risk his safety to ensure mine. I know I did for him but that's different. Honestly I've liked him almost since the day I met him. He's a good looking man, strong, loyal, he doesn't think that because I'm some genetic experiment that I'm in constant need of protection. "Say. When you get outta this hospital. You wouldn't wanna, I don't know, grab some dinner with me?"
"Jesse McCree. Are you- are you asking me out on a date?" I smiled shyly.
"Yeah. I guess I am." He shrugged.
"I'd love to." His face lit up, "where are we going to go though? I can't exactly go out like this, remember what happened to me as a child?" I'd told him about how, despite being an experiment my creators, I couldn't ever call them parents they felt nothing for me nor I for them, made me go to public school. I knew nothing but ridicule from people until I ran away and was found by Overwatch. Since then I've never been out in public.
"But now you are a strong and beautiful woman. What can their words do to you? Nothing. Besides, they gotta get through me first." He smiled, placing his hand on my cheek. "I'll let you get some rest Darlin'. I'll come check in on you tomorrow Yeh?"
"Yeah." He got up, tipped his hat to me and walked out. A date with McCree, not how I thought my day would turn out but there you go.
Time skip
I fiddled with my dress and sat on the couch quietly preening my feathers while waiting for McCree. "Yano. If you do that too much they'll fall out." I heard the silky smooth voice speak behind me.
"Just trying to look my best." I smiled turning to face him. "Making do with one wing having less feathers is stressful. It'd be like if I shaved off half your beard, you'd be really self conscious about it." He smiled.
"I suppose, if you put it like that." He shrugged. He held out his hand to me, I took it and we walked out of the base and into town. It was relatively quiet for an evening on the weekend.
As we entered the restaurant I kept my wings as tight to my back as I could. Keeping them in this position however grew rather uncomfortable, I could also feel eyes in the back of my head as we sat down.
"Everyone's staring at me." I spoke, me head lowered.
"Who wouldn't? I for one can't take my eyes off you Darlin'." He took my hand across the table. "I guess no one here has ever seen an angel before eh?" I couldn't help but blush.
The rest of the meal was lovely, he continuously kept me in conversation to avoid both awkward silence and me thinking about people staring at us. It was one of the best nights I'd had in a long time.
On the walk back to the base we just chatted about what we'd done during the day. His day mainly being training and mine being check ups with Dr Ziegler.
We were nearly back when a group of lads grabbed me by my wrist and pulled me away from McCree. "Yano. I'd heard that some freak had come into town but this is not what I expected." The lead man spoke eyeing me up and down. "Hey! How much to take this pretty little pet off your hands?" He addressed McCree Who looked hurt and angry at once, predominantly angry though.
"She's my girl, and she's not for sale." He warned pulling his gun out on the men holding me.
"Whatcha gonna Do with that antique? Probably couldn't shoot a single round." He laughed taunting McCree.
"I-I wouldn't. It shoots perfectly fine and he's the quickest and the best shot around." I spoke to my captor, which only earned me a harsh slap across the face. This infuriated McCree to the point where he shot the wrist of the man holding my wrist, he immediately let go and this gave me chance to spin round and roundhouse kick the lead guy in the face.
McCree walked over to the man laying on the floor clutching his nose. "You ever think of laying so much as a finger on my girl ever again you won't be gettin' off so lightly. Got it?!" The guy nodded and the group scurried off. McCree turned and walked back to me, I too had my hand over my cheek/eye. He gently took my hand pulling it away from my face. His eyes widened in shock. "Jesse. I'm fine."
"No. That scumbag did this. I should've shot him when I had the chance." He frowned looking away.
"Hey. I knew something had to happen. I'm not exactly normal looking." He looked away. "But, I really did enjoy tonight. The dinner that is. When I was there with you, I didn't care who looked at me." He looked back, smiling slightly.
"So. You'd do it again?"
"Of course. Maybe we could go somewhere else though that place was a little fancy for me." I laughed. "You know me, I'd be happy going to a cafe, all those people were so posh."
"You're right about that Darlin'." He laughed. "Let's get home and get Mercy to patch you up."
"Thanks Jesse. I really did have a great time."

Meh. The end was rushed but eh. Sorry.
