Chapter 7; don't piss off the dead.

Start from the beginning

He begged Diana to bring her back, cried for the Gods and Goddesses to have mercy on him. Colden had to make it right. He never properly apologised or explained why, what, how.

Rained battered against his face as he wept and yelled. Mourned howls sang through the night at the loss of their Luna. Tom loyally had stayed with him. Colden didn't deserve such kindness. He didn't deserve Alice.

"Alpha..."

Colden shook his head as he smoothed back Alice's hair and closed her eyes. His lips traced her eyelids, her nose, her lips. "I don't want to let her go. Not when I hadn't made it right."

"She had her own demons, Alpha, it wasn't your fault." Tom soothed, shuffling closer.

"I had ruined her," Colden muttered her face in the crook of his neck.

"She was broken. You didn't know."

"I should have known." Colden snapped angrily. Exhaustion weighed him down, it mingled with the sadness that pierced his heart.

"But you didn't and there's nothing you can do." Tom's voice was firmer.

Dead. She was dead.

"Alice deserves to be put to rest. Diana will walk her to the hunting land and she will help her find her light. But it must be done the right way, Alpha." Tom inched closer until he was face to face with Colden.

He understood what he said. He knew that it was the right thing to do.

Colden would feel guilty for the rest of his life.

He nodded, trembling at the fact that he would not see her again. He didn't even have any memories to remember her by- no stolen kisses, no nights spent together watching the sunset, no moons spent hunting...The day he had met her was not something he wanted to remember.

Alice's head tipped back as he stood with her in his arms. She was beautiful even as her skin had gone pale and blood splattered her hair. She was his own Goddess, his beauty...

"Do you want_"

Colden interrupted his Delta's voice, "I want to be alone." And because Tom was a loyal friend and even more of a loyal commander, he nodded his head with a bow and left to arrange the funeral. It would be the second one he needed to plan.

The manor was empty the moment he stepped through. Alice's scent still hung heavily within the building and it clung to his body like a cacoon. Sadness weighed his steps as he left towards the morgue. He was walking through a nightmare, each step heavier and more surreal.

What had he done?

Diana would not forgive such carelessness from an Alpha. Colden swallowed back the tears. There were people to look after but who would look after him?

Doctor Eaton greeted him with a bow. The same heartache that he had been feeling lingered behind the Doctor's eyes. He would not be seeing his Luna live and grow, he would not be delivering any of his pups. It was a sad time for all. And it was his fault.

"I will be as gentle as possible, Alpha. I will do my best to honour our Luna." The old man's touch was somewhat comforting. He was the only parent figure he's had for seven years time. But Colden had no fight in him left to argue so he placed his Alice onto the metal table and watched as the doctor cleaned her.

She was beautiful. And it hurt him, even more, knowing that the peace that lingered on her pale face was because she had left him. Yet Colden didn't understand. Why hadn't he smelt her humanity that time in the club? The bond was bright and clear and he went on instinct thinking that his Alice was too a she-wolf. She responded to his touch, she returned his affections and his kisses.

It was when the fear that grew on her face after she saw what he was that he knew he had made a mistake. It was too late.

Doctor Eaton left without saying any more words. The door to the morgue shut with a quiet click and then he was alone. Colden sat before her with her hand clutched in his. Her nails were bitten down and he wondered how often she had cried? How often had she screamed and yelled because of her hate for life?

What had happened to her?

Tears trailed down his cheeks. This time he wept in silence. There was no use screaming now. She would not come back. Colden trailed his hand down her now brushed hair- it was soft to the touch. It had been long when he had seen her dancing to the music.

He rested his head slowly against her chest. Perhaps he didn't deserve such content but...he had to apologise. He had to let her know. Colden intertwined his fingers with hers, smoothing back a stray piece of hair.

His breaths came out laboured and his eyes blurred. What had he done? "I'm sorry," his voice cracked as tears continued to run down his face. "I am so, so sorry. You don't know how..." He inhaled sharply.

A coward is what he was; he should have chased her down that night and explained, made her listen, helped her with the transition. Even if she didn't want what came with his claim he should have done it and then let her go if she wanted to forget his existence. She had been tortured by her own body and mind for a year. And the reason she now lay cold and lifeless was because he had failed.

Perhaps he deserved this pain.

Colden stood. The chair scraped against the tiled floor. Her name would forever burn his mind and his soul and there was no coming back from a beauty like his mate.

His lips brushed hers in a quiet goodbye. A tear splashed onto her cheek and he wiped the wetness away with the tip of his thumb- she would not feel any more sadness because of him.

Air fanned the side his face for a brief moment. His eyes snapped to her chest and he thought that he heard the quiet beat of a heart. But he couldn't...not when he heard heart her body splatter against the ground. He swallowed the bile in his throat as he waited and listened. Alice's chest briefly rose. It wasn't possible. And he was certain that he had started to lose his sanity.

Colden pulled away with shaking hands. He saw her chest move once more and heard the quiet flow of her blood. He was dreaming or Diana started her torture for his failures.

He took a step back and that's when Alice bolted up from the dead gasping for air.

"Am I dead?" Colden stared in horror as she met his gaze, alive and breathing.
