I waited expectantly on the sofa for Ryder to return. I heard his car lock and the screech of the screen door.

"Close your eyes," he shouted from outside.

"Ok!"

I cover my eyes with my hand and listened intently as he walked inside and shut the door behind me. I heard something heavy be set on the ground in front of us, and I couldn't wait to see what it was.

"Ryder! Can I open my eyes yet?"

"Okay, open," he said after shuffling around the room.

I removed my hand and my mouth dropped at the surprise in front of me.

"No way," I exclaimed moving on the floor to get a closer look.

"Are you serious? This is for me?" I asked looking up at his smiling face.

"Yeah, Lys," he said sitting down next to me on the floor, "go on."

I run my fingers over the guitar strings and my smile grows. I remove it from its snug case and caress. He smiles and reaches behind him placing his own guitar in his lap.

"Play something and I'll join in," he says placing his pick in his mouth so he can tune his guitar.

I strum the strings to make sure it's tuned and place my fingers in their familiar spots on the guitar's neck.

"Carry on, let the good times roll
Sail along, let your path unfold
It won't be long, won't be long, won't be long
You know it's gonna get better
You know it's gonna get better
Say a prayer for the broken bones
'Cause who cares?
We're all going home
And it won't be long, won't be long, won't be long
You know it's gonna get better
You know it's gonna get better
I got one foot in the golden life, one foot in the gutter
So close to the other side, so far from the wonder
I got one foot in the golden life, one foot in the gutter
So sick of the tug of war, that keeps pulling me under
Let the good times roll
Let the good times roll
Carry on, outlast the ignorance
Moving on, survive the innocence
Won't be long, won't be long, won't be long
You know it's gonna get better"
