once upon a time
there were two girls
who made up worlds
in the playground.
characters,
stories,
whirlwinds of ideas,
stealing aesthetics and plots from
the pages of books
flashes of color in film
and from the fabric of the music
that spilled out
under bits of dialogue
that they quoted and
invented their own from.
they weren't always princesses.
they weren't always queens.
they were:
mages
vampires
elves
themselves
wizards
girls with magical powers;
sometimes
they pretended to be bullies
sometimes
they were their favorite characters
woven from endless tales,
into their own
as they phased in and out of love
with each series.
they were heroines,
their kingdoms were on the peeling play structures
and the trees overlooking the houses
lined up side by side for miles
and no one could
ever take that away.
