Chapter 29- Cry me a River

Carlos

It's been a week... And Allison is still sleeping. Her sugar is dropping. Her blood pressure is not normal. Her body is giving up, there is a pulse monitor connected to her and still I don't know how to save her.

Hindi ako umaalis sa tabi niya. I am sleeping beside her. Begging her to wake up.

"I'm sorry Allison. Please wake up." Paulit-ulit na sinasabi ko sa kanya.

Naabutan ako ni Beth na nakaupo sa tabi ni Allison.
"Carlos." Malungkot na tinapik ni Beth ang balikat ko bago siya umupo sa kabilang bahagi ng kama.
"She's fading." Beth murmured.
"She will make it." I replied.
"Her body is dying, can't you see?" Beth has fresh tears in her eyes.
"I won't give up on her." I replied.

"Namatay si lola dahil napagbintangan siyang mangkukulam. Hindi niya nailigtas ang isang bata sa probinsya namin. Someone put a stake on her chest. Naghihingalo siyang dinala sa hospital. Hindi namin alam kung paano ililigtas si lola. Matagal ng patay si nanay, then Auntie Alona tried to save lola. Hinila niya si lola pabalik kagaya ng ginawa ni Allison kay Zoey. Pero hindi din nagtagal at namatay si lola dahil mahina na ang katawan niya. Ang talisman ni Auntie Alona, nag-asawa ng iba ng malaman nitong merong gift si Auntie. Naiwan sa kanya si Allison." Inayos ni Beth ang buhok ni Allison. Para siyang manika na natutulog. Her black hair is contrasted with her white pillow.

"Hindi nakayanan ni auntie ang mga multo na sabay-sabay na hinihila siya. She went into coma..." Unti-unting pumatak ang luha ni Beth.
"...like this. Her human body died, but her spirits were trapped somewhere we can't go." Umalog ang mga balikat ni Beth dahil sa pag-iyak.
"Halos dalawang lingo lang ang pagitan ng mamatay si lola at Auntie. Bago mamatay si lola, binilin niyang huwag namin gagamitin ni Allison ang gift namin dahil mapapahamak kami. But Allie used it to save Zoey. She never ever regrets that, Carlos."
"Takot si Allison na magkaanak kaya tinutulak ka nya palayo dati. Alam niyang ikaw ang talisman niya. Hindi siya magmamahal ng iba kahit hindi mo siya piliin. Ayaw niyang mapasa sa anak niya ang gift na meron kami. It's a gift but most of the time it's a curse to us." Beth dried her tears.

"Bakit hindi niya sinabi sa akin?"

"Gusto nyang piliin mo siya hindi dahil kailangan ka nya kung hindi dahil kailangan mo siya. Iyon ang huling sinabi nya sa akin bago siya pumunta dito. She wanted to come clean to you. She wanted to talk to you about her fear."

"I hope I can give you some encouragement. But you have to accept the possibilities that she will not come back." Tumayo si Beth at iniwan akong nakatitig sa mukha ni Allison.

It was past midnight when my mom came to Allie's room.

"I was hoping you are still awake." Sabi niya. Tumabi siya sa akin at niyakap ako.
"She hasn't opened her eyes yet." I replied.

Nakatingin si mommy kay Allison. Pinagmamasdan namin ang paghinga niya.

"Sa pamilya natin, ikaw ang pinakamasayahin. Pilyo nga ang tawag ng lolo mo sayo." Mom rested her head on my shoulder.
"Hindi ko kayang nakikita kitang malungkot, Carlos. Siguro iyon ang naging pagkakamali ko. Hindi ko pinakilala sayo ang pakiramdam na maging malungkot."
"You gave me so much, mommy." I replied to her.
"Yes, I did to the point that I spoiled you and Cailee so much." Mom kissed my shoulder and rested her head again.
"Noong pinanganak kita, hindi ka umiyak kahit pinalo ka ng doctor. Sumigaw ka ng pinalo ka niya. Sa tuwing nagugutom ka, sumisigaw ka lang pero hindi ka umiiyak. Kahit nasusugatan ka, nasasaktan ka, hindi ka umiiyak. Kahit ng mawala ang lolo mo, hindi ka umiyak." I felt my mom's tears.
"Hindi kahinaan ang umiyak Carlos. Alam kong malungkot ka at nasasaktan. Gusto kong akuin ang nararamdaman mo. But that pain is yours. And you are the only one that can own that."
"I don't know what to do, mommy."
"Trust Allison that she will come back. Babalik siya sayo. At kapag nangyari yun, tigilan mo ang pagiging pilyo." Mom gave me a small smile and kissed my head.
"I love her." I told my mom.
"I know you do. And I am proud of you for choosing her."

When mom went out and the door has been closed. I slide next to Allison and I lay my head next to her.

"Allie..." I said her name...And I feel the burning of tears at the back of my eyes.
But this time, I let it flow. Wetting her shoulder as I don't know how to shut down my tears now.
"I'm sorry for hurting you. For not sorting it out earlier. I was so focused on running after you that I left all the skeleton behind to chase me and ruin our future . Please come back sweetheart. Come back to me and never leave me. As I can't go on without you. You are my everything, Allison."
I allowed myself to feel weak because I am weak without her.
"The day you step into my life, you change it into something beautiful and meaningful. You may not be the first woman that made me feel loved, but you're the only woman I want to love to the core."
I buried my wet face into the hollow of her neck. Inhaling her scent.

"Mahal na mahal kita Allison." I kissed her cheek and cried my hearts out.
