Chapter 7

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to walk again,” Riker groans, flopping onto the couch. He’s a sweaty mess; we all are. We just finished five laps around the lake. It turns out that lake is bigger than I thought. I got around one and a half pretty good, but the other four were like death.

Lexi is probably in the worst shape out of all of us. She could barely finish one. Piers and Riker were practically racing themselves; see who could finish first. But they still had trouble, finally slowed down to where I was pacing myself. Piers finished first, then Riker, then me, and then Lexi.

We don’t even include Ace, who finished way before any of us did.

He’s currently standing up, grinning at our pain. “You know, I’m glad I’m half vampire. I don’t have to feel that soreness. I feel like I could run five more.”

“Go eat shit,” I spit at him.

“Someone’s a bit angry,” He chirps, winking at me. “You’re hot when your sweaty.”

Lexi isn’t even here. She went straight for the shower when we got in. I guess she doesn’t like sweat. If Piers is in pain, he isn’t showing it. He’s sitting on the couch, head back, eyes closed. He seems relaxed.

“I give you credit,” Riker says, rolling his head to stare at me. I’m currently downing water like it’s my life. “I didn’t think you were going to go through five laps.”

I pause in drinking water. It’s half going into my mouth, half spraying all over me. But I don’t care; it feels cool. “I stay true to my word.” I pause. “It’s also how my dad first trained me when I first started hunting vampires.”

Piers looks over at me, eyes widening a fraction. “You trained like this? Everyday? How old were you?”

I squint, trying to remember when I first started on the weekly workouts. “Um…when I was fourteen? Maybe fifteen?” I haven’t done it this kind of training in years. I didn’t need it, up until now.

Riker blows out a whistle. “Ace was right, you are a tough cookie.”

I smirk, throwing my head back and closing my eyes. “My dad didn’t mess around.”

A door opens. I open my eyes and see Lexi walk out in fresher clothing. She waves at it, walking up the stairs. “It’s open.”

Riker scrambles up faster than I can blink. He dashes in, slamming the door behind him. Seconds later the shower turns on. I grunt. “Fucker.”

Piers smirks at my discontent. “There’s another shower upstairs, you know.”

I glance at him. “Oh.”

“Ladies first,” He says, waving his hand up towards the stairs.
