Chapter 12

***

Lakeland, Florida

Tuesday morning, following Raw, Val and Joe sat in one of the examination rooms at Brook Valley Women's Clinic. Val quietly browsed through her social media accounts while Joe handled several calls regarding his schedule over the next few weeks. As she listened to him iron out the details, she thanked her lucky stars that she'd be with him on every date. Had she still been on SDLive, she would not have seen him until Christmas. Guess this whole pregnancy thing isn't so bad after all, she thought as she rubbed her belly. Joe glanced up at her just in time and flashed her a soft smile, winking as he finished his call.

"Alright, thanks, Carano."

He stood and slipped the phone into his pocket, then wedged himself between Val's legs, resting his hands on her thighs.

"You OK?" he asked.

"Yeah, I'm good. Just ready to get to Little Rock."

"How do you think everyone's gonna take the news?"

"I'm sure they're gonna be thrilled. What about your family?"

"They're happy about it," he answered.

"Wait," she said, cinching her brow, "you already told 'em?"

"Yeah, a couple days ago."

"You jerk! We were supposed to do it together!" she softly exclaimed, lightly jabbing his chest with her fist.

"I know, I know. I'm sorry, baby," he said, rubbing his hands along the length of her thighs. "Don't be mad at me. I just couldn't hold it in anymore. You made me walk around with that news for two weeks."

"You're an asshole."

"I'm your asshole, though," he said, kissing her forehead.

Minutes later, the doctor joined them in the exam room and Val's first prenatal visit got underway.

She never knew that she'd have so many questions about being pregnant. Her biggest concern with becoming pregnant again had been about her chances of miscarrying for a second time. As Joe had told her a few weeks ago when she revealed her and Mark's loss to him, the doctor advised her that a lot of women suffer the same fate on the first pregnancy and that, with proper nutrition and prenatal care, her chances of carrying a child to term were just as high as any other woman's. The doctor's reassurance seemed to ease her nerves as she and Joe continued with the visit.

"According to the date of your last menstrual cycle, you're between seven and eight weeks," the doctor said as she read through Val's paperwork.

"Dr. Campbell," Joe started, "twins run in my family. Can we go ahead and get an ultrasound to see if she might be carrying more than one football player?"

Val gave Joe a side stare and shook her head as the doctor softly laughed.

"I'm glad you mentioned that, Mr. Anoa'i. I actually need to know if your wife is carrying multiples as that would denote a high-risk pregnancy. Since we're bordering on the early side of detection, we'll need to do a transvaginal ultrasound."

"I'm sorry. Did you say 'transvaginal?'" Val asked.

"Yes, ma'am. The probe goes inside instead of on your belly."

"Aw hell," Val exclaimed, wrinkling her nose in displeasure.

"I promise you, it's not as bad as it sounds, and you'll also get to hear your baby's heartbeat."
