Writing requires description. That's just a fact. But the best books are the types of books which make their description engaging and interesting for the reader, and can paint the picture of what is happening.

Personally, I like to use the thesaurus app to find synonyms for words I use commonly to vary and add something different to my writing instead of using the word 'said' one hundred times. However, some writers go very overkill with this and use fancy vocabulary that doesn't fit with the rhythm of the text. Finding a balance between more simple words and more descriptive ones is different for each book, so as an author you have to make the call.

Some people say they struggle writing description, and if that sounds like something you would say my biggest piece of advice is to read a lot and see how other writers do it. Description is something that should flow very naturally, so instead of forcing lots of similes and metaphors, picture what you want to describe in your head and then write down what you see. Editing later can make that description more literary or technical, but for a first draft it doesn't need to be too 'fancy'.
