They Couldn't Put Out Your Candle

You used to leave your window unlocked,
Saying it was for Spider-Man.
You hung up mistletoe in doorways,
And tied red ribbons to your pinkie finger.
You skipped over cracks in the sidewalk,
And blew wishes carried on dandelion seeds
And eyelashes.
You photographed fairy rings,
Knocked on wood,
And crossed your fingers for good luck.

Your eyes were set on the horizon,
Seeking dragons among the clouds.
You chased rainbows for leprechauns and their gold.
It seemed no darkness could touch you,
Since you shined so bright.

But despair leaves none whole,
and heartbreak leaves none untouched.
And you were daydreaming when your walls came crashing down.

I watched your dreams drown in Sadness,
Your future ripped apart in Worry.
Your blood turned the oceans red,
Ans your skin burned like fire.
And when the tides went out,
You told me you no longer believed in dreams.
You picked up your skeletal remains and said goodbye to the sky you loved so much.
Dreams are made to be broken, you said.
And hearts are meant to be protected.
Your eyes dulled and blurred. You told me you'd grown up as you hugged yourself and walked away.

But I couldn't help but notice you crossed your fingers and your eyes glanced back at the sky.
Your window's still left open for Spider-Man.
