Ephemeral

[əˈfem(ə)rəl]

Adjective.

1. The wisps of misty breath curling from your lips on a winter morning, the heat from a cup of coffee seeping through your gloves and into your fingers. The light snowfall floating through the air the day you made a snowman.

2. The petals of the first rose unfurling on a spring afternoon. The rains that soaked through your clothes as you ran back home. His smile on a Wednesday afternoon, and the laughter that came along with it.

3. It's the light henna on your hands, crumbling and falling away as you move your hair from your face.

4. It's the smiles you thought would last forever. But then you laughed too hard, smiled too often and closed your eyes. And it was gone in the blink of an eye, the span of a second, in an intake of one short breath.

5. And you're left hanging, wondering if it was ever there in the first place. Staring at the empty spaces, ribbons weaving through them. One day, the ribbons will bind together too tightly and the gaps will disappear. Ephemeral.
