josh's pov
*the day josh left ava's apartment*
the drive home was long and lonely. i imagined what it would be like if ava would have come home with me.
driving down the road, listening to the radio, drumming my fingers on the steering wheel while we sing along to our favorite songs.
maybe one day.
when i got into columbus, i headed straight the tyler's place. i was staying there, while we were getting ready to go on tour. i pulled up to the driveway and grabbed the few things i brought with me to ava's, then headed inside.
i easily gained access with my key tyler had trusted me with. when i entered the living room i saw tyler sitting on the arm chair with his ukulele. he was working on our new song and it sounded great, but i felt bad for leaving him to work on it himself.
"hey ty, i'm back! that sounds great by the way." i say setting my stuff on the kitchen counter.
tyler looks up from his work and mumbles a quick "hi." something wasn't right. it made me feel even worse for leaving unexpectedly like i did. i also never responded to his texts and that made me realize it probably only made the situation worse.
"mind if i sit down on my drums and join?" i ask trying to get him to warm back up to me.
"sure" ,and with that i grab my drumsticks out of my drawer and sit down on the stool behind my drum kit.
we played the song a few times and worked out the kinks, but i could sense the vibe between us still wasn't right. we hardly talked and when we did it was a short remark such as, "that was good" or "let's try that again"
i set my drumsticks down and walk over to tyler, "ty i'm sorry"
he's still. no movement. no sound. just still.
"ava means a lot to me and i was having nightmares and i just needed to meet her. i'm sorry i left you to work on the song alone. but i'm here now so can you please forgive me?"
tyler looks up. his only movement.
"tyler, what's wrong? please talk to me. you're my best friend"
he moves once again, setting his ukulele down on the couch next to him. still no sound other than his quiet breathing. tyler places his hands in his lap, lacing his fingers. i speak again.
"ty..." i say not knowing how this would end. i really didn't want to loose my best friend.
but this time he speaks, "josh, i didn't know what was happening and i felt like you couldn't trust me. we are best friends and i thought we were open with each other. but when you left with almost no explanation it didn't feel right."
"ty-"
"no josh" he cuts me off "...josh you mean a lot to me and you're my best friend and the best i could ask for to be my best friend, if that makes sense"
"tyler, i'm sorry. i didn't realize how all of this would affect you."
"it's okay i'm just glad you're back now"
"me too" i say engulfing tyler into a hug. "how bout i make some pancakes to make it up to you?"
tyler's face lights up, "can you make them blueberry?"
"of course"
after i finished cooking the pancakes i motioned tyler to join me at the table. we sat eating in silence mostly, until i asked the question. "hey ty?"
tyler looks up from his plate swallowing another bite of the blueberry pancake in front of him, "yeah josh?"
"would it be okay with you if ava came along on tour with us? it's the best way to spend time with her while we're on tour and she said she'd think about it so-"
"sure" he says cutting me short.
"are you sure?" i question, he doesn't seem to be liking the situation that's been going on lately.
"josh you are my best friend and if ava coming along for a while will make you happy then i'm okay with it. i just want my best friend happy"
i look into tyler's eyes and see the empathy i hear in his voice, but behind that curtain of caring i see hurt. i know tyler cares for me and is doing this for me but i also know he's not comfortable with it. "it will only be for a month or two of the tour at most, i promise" i say trying to get him to warm up to the idea a bit more.
"that's fine josh" tyler says returning back to the pancake on his plate.
"okay i'll call ava later and talk to her about the plan. i figured she could come along for the southwestern us part of the tour, that way she can go site seeing and get to go to la"
tyler nods his head finishing his last bite and swallowing, "good idea, thanks again for the pancakes josh!"
