Warning: slight mention of abuse, no foul language though
This year, Philip and Theodosia are in the same class. They have a 1st and 2nd grade class in one. They are still very close.

Age 6/7
"Philly, I'm scared," Theo said quietly.
"There's nothing to be scared of. You can have fun! And I'll be there," Philip said reassuringly.
"B-but..."
"But what? Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Sorry," Theo said slowly.
"Hey, it's fine. Let's go!!"

Theo was scared. Kindergarten was a different story. Kindergarten was easy. But first grade?

She wasn't looking forward to it.

Philip was thrilled. He would finally have Theo in his class.

He hoped that he could make her feel better.

The day before school starts
"Papa, please don't make me go!" Theo cried out.
"Darling, then how are you going to learn?"
"By reading."
"You read at school, honey!" Burr said and plopped her up on his king sized bed.

That took her mind off of things for roughly ten minutes.

Calm down, Theo. You're only six. And Philip is going to help you.

Philip really was the best of friends.

The day school starts
"Hello class! My name is Mrs. Washington. My husband is Mr. Washington, who works at the middle school. Are y'all excited?"

"Yes!" the class shouted.

On that first day of school, the first graders learned different shapes.

Theo didn't know there were so many!

"There are hexagons, octagons, triangles, circles, squares, rectangles, cylinders..." Philip said, forgetting that Theo was in the grade below.

"Oops! Sorry Theo," Philip said.
"It's okay! Teach me more."

The next few months
While still learning her first grade work, Theo started picking up on second grade.

She helped Philip out with his math often. She helped him study for his reading tests, and she gave him advice for geography.

"Okay... so it's North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Australia, Antarctica... Africa!" Theo sang.

Philip never heard her sing before.
"That was pretty, Theo," Philip said.
"Thanks Philly! School is not that bad," Theo said.

One day, Mrs. Washington wanted to talk to Theodosia and her parents. Theo had no idea what it was for.

"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Burr. We're here because little Theodosia completely excels in her school work," Mrs. Washington said.

"We think it's appropriate if Theodosia skips second grade.

I believe she has been learning the exact same material as the rest of the second grade class. It would be no hassle. Would you except that?"

"Yeah! Then I can be in Philly's class!" Theo exclaimed.
"I guess it's fine with us," Mrs. Burr said.

Theodosia left school that day feeling amazing, like anything was possible.

"Hey Philly!!!!"
"Hey Theo! Why are you so happy?"
"I'm going to be in your class next year!!!"
"Really?? Yay!! What did you have to do?"
"I don't really know... but I know that I'll be going to third grade with you."
"I knew you were the smartest girl!"

When Philip said that, Theodosia beamed.

"Thank you Philly!"
"It's true!" Philip said, pulling her in for a hug.
"I like you a lot," Theo whispered.
"Huh?" Philip asked.
"Um... I like you a lot," Theo said louder.
"I like you a lot, too!"
"I like you more, best bestest friend!"

Summer
It was finally time to take a break.

The school year was fun, but now Philip and Theo could almost do whatever they want (with certain restrictions of course)

Of course, they both wanted to go to each other's houses, even though it usually ended up being Philip's house.

They spent hours just talking about random things. They learned everything about each other.

"What's your favorite color?" Philip asked.
"Light purple."
"What's your favorite book?"
"Judy Bloom...?"
"When's your birthday?"
"June 21st."
"You're birthday is so soon!" Philip said happily.
"Why does it matter?"
"Because you'll be seven! We'll be the same age," Philip said.
"Oh," Theo muttered.
"You look tired. Do you want to sleep?"
"Sure."

Philip helped her go up the stairs to his room and he tucked her in.

"On your birthday, we're doing something fun," he whispered, even though she was already drifting off.
"Sleep well,Theo."
"I will," she mumbled, right before falling asleep.

June 21st (Theo's bday)
Philip decided that he wanted to surprise Theodosia for her seventh birthday. She never really discusses personal things.

He had a plan. He was going to try and draw her, put it in a frame, and go to her house with a card. It was the best he could do.

He's been trying to draw her for awhile. He studied the copies of art in his house. His favorite was a little cartoon in black & white. He sort of copied that style.

When he was finally done, he continued with his plan. He rang the door bell but no one answered. The door was unlocked, so he stepped into the smaller house.

"Hello? Are you there, Theo?"

Philip asked cautiously. He walked further into the house. He heard some noise upstairs. He walked up the stairs and peered into a small room.

Theo was there, talking in her sleep.

"Mama, don't let him hurt me... help me, please!" Theo said in her sleep. "I-it hurts, mommy help!!" Theo's voice became hoarse and painful to hear.

She was pale, and she was sweating. "Mommy why aren't you helping..." her voice broke.

"Theo! Theo, wake up! You're dreaming... are you alright? Where's your mom and dad? Why did they leave you...?" Philip yelled. "

"Philip!" She said, crying.
"Theo, what happened?"
"When I was younger, bad things happened to me. I'm not supposed to talk about it."
"I'm sorry. I'm here and I won't let anyone hurt you again. I promise!!"
"But where are your parents?"
"I think they had to go to a meeting. I'm supposed to go over to your house anyway," Theo stated, her face still glistening with tears.

"Well... happy birthday!" Philip said, trying to lighten the mood. He gave her the picture of herself.

"Whoa. Thank you so much! It's beautiful. It would be a sad birthday without you here," Theo said with confidence in her voice.

"Theo?"
"Yeah?"
"I still like you a lot, ya know."

That comment made her face light up.

Philip does like her a lot.
