Chapter 16 – Yes, I do believe you

     Where are you, Marilyn?

I remembered her walking here. She must’ve gone somewhere where there aren’t any people to make fun of her or laugh at her. It must be quite tough. One day before everybody adored her and loved her, the day after she’s a laughing stock.

Suddenly, when everybody saw the popular group walking towards us, they crowd around and tried to talk and ask questions, at least to make those popular people turn their own eyes on them for just a moment. Marilyn’s usually the head of them, the most popular one, but I guess they took the chance and kick her out so that now they can have all their so called ‘fame’.

“Hey, Iliana, there’s a party at my house tonight, do you guys all want to come?” One of the girls asked loudly so that one of the popular girls can hear, but I don’t think she’s getting an answer.

“Hey, why isn’t Marilyn with you?” One of the boys asked, pushing himself in so that he could get closer to them. When the popular group heard that, they all laughed and soon after, the other people crowding around them laughed too, just so they could fit in with them.

Josh, one of the boys in the popular group answered with a shrug, “Maybe she got bitten by a vampire.” Then, another fits of laughter fills the air. “All I know is,” Josh continued, “She’s not with us anymore. Actually, we never liked her in the first place. So stop asking questions about her, we all don’t really care.”

His other popular friends nodded their head in agreement.

“Yeah, I don’t really like her either.” One girl added, hoping the popular people would hear her. Soon after, everybody started adding insults to Marilyn and joke about her. It all had a lot to do with vampires.

I guess I should know that everybody don’t really love her, they just want to be nice to her to let her see them so that they could be in the popular group as well. That’s how things work in high school.

When her reputation goes down, no one even cares anymore… even her popular group of so called, ‘friends’. I mean, yes, what she said was stupid to normal human beings, Ash being a vampire, but they didn’t have to be so harsh on her and just kick her out like that. I mean, aren’t they friends?

Talking about Ash, I didn’t even see him this whole morning. I guess now it’s not a good time to see him anyway, I need to clear things out with Marilyn first and ask if it’s really true.

I went to those less empty hallways, and began searching around.

“Where are you, Marilyn?” I muttered softly, not meaning to talk or ask anyone about it, but luckily I muttered those few words, because then there was a voice that I knew couldn’t be mistaken.

“What? You want to comfort me about it?”

I turn my head around and saw Marilyn sitting on the floor at the corner, where no one would see her, because I’m sure I wouldn’t too. This hallway was quite empty, because it was all those narrow ones. The other one was crowded with people because it was the main hallway with everybody’s locker. Maybe it was also crowded because the popular people are there.

Marilyn looked at me and I couldn’t help but have a slight pity on her. I bet she knew from this moment on that she’s on her own. Her reputation had dropped so low that I don’t think she has one anymore. I couldn’t help but sympathize even though she was rude to me.

     “Marilyn, I-"

“Oh wait, no, why would you comfort to me about it? Everybody in this school is heartless. You’ll probably laugh at me and rub it on my face. That’s perfect. You could hurry do it now, I don’t mind. I want to know what insult you have in mind.” Marilyn gave me a bitter smile.
