She knew what she was implying - that Sylvia was like his family and that Amber had nothing to worry about but it didn't stop her mind from torturing her with thoughts of her deepest insecurities.
Amber shifted in her seat in an attempt to alleviate the knots in her stomach.
It only took Alex a brief glance to know what she was thinking, making her curse internally at how easily he was able to read her.
But Amber could read him too; when he pursed his mouth as he was doing in that moment, she knew that he was biting the inside of his mouth to keep his patience with her. It was a rare expression for him, but Amber despised its abrupt appearances on his face.
"Look, if it makes you feel better, we'll come up with a safe word for when you're feeling uncomfortable and we'll go straight home," he told her with a sigh which make her heart sink a little.
"You promise we'll come straight out? You won't brush me aside and tell me to wait?" Her voice came out sounding more child-like than she would have liked. She mentally cursed herself this time.
Her tone, however, made Alex's expression soften. He glanced at her as long as possible and replied gently, "I promise."
She couldn't help but sigh a breath of relief. It meant a lot to her that he was taking her seriously. She took it as a good omen for what they were about to encounter.
"Okay, well it has to be a worse that we wouldn't normally use. You know, it can't be 'sandwich' because she might be serving sandwiches for lunch, and then one of us will say it and then we'll -"
Alex looked over to her with a fond glance, making her cut herself short.
"What's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?"
Her questions made him smile. "You're rambling. You used to do it a lot when we first started dating."
Amber grimaced at him. "You try coming up with a code word without rambling."
Alex shrugged. "Fine. How about 'blow'?"
"Blow?" Amber repeated dubiously.
Alex chuckled and nodded. "Yeah. Blow. You know, as in going for the blow? It's our phrase. Don't tell me you've forgotten."
A grin broke out across Amber's face. She loved having things to share with him. Alex briefly glanced over at her and matched her smile.
"That's perfect."
The drive didn't last as long as Amber wished it would. By the time they pulled up in front of the little cottage, Amber had fixed everything there was to fix. Feeling the urge to fiddle, she spent most of the journey making sure every single strand of her hair was tucked into her pony tail and that her make-up was flawless. Her hands were itching to be kept busy. It was evident that Alex had noticed because as soon as he had killed the engine, he took her hands in his to stop them from shaking.
"You have nothing to worry about, I promise you."
There was such sincerity in the pools of his eyes that it knocked the wind out of Amber's chest. She wordlessly nodded.
It turned out that Alex stayed true to his promises. The door swung open before Alex could even knock, robbing Amber of her chance to calm her herself. The abruptness of the situation took her aback so much that all her niggling fears fell right out of her head.
The blonde who opened the door was beautiful and Amber felt awe wash over her as her eyes fell on such a radiant smile.
Her eyes rose from shimmering white teeth to a pair of affectionate and warm eyes that reflected the colour of the sky.
